The world was made up of monsters. And they weren't the sort that Orihime fought against, either.
What Orihime didn't understand, or so Tatsuki thought, was that people could be the biggest, ugliest monsters of all.
She could never believe that someone would want to hurt her. Orihime had probably been hurt more than most people - and yet, miraculously, she still saw the best in everyone. Tatsuki didn't understand it.
Orihime thought that boys who treated her specially were "nice," never once giving thought to the notion that they might have ulterior motives. Of course, a growl and an intimidating gesture from Tatsuki was usually enough to put any ideas said boys might be having about Orihime to rest.
Sometimes, Tatsuki wanted to shake Orihime until she understood that the world was not a perfect place. She wanted to say, "Why are you so blind, Orihime?" Then, she would remind herself that it was precisely this innocence which caused her to love Orihime so much in the first place.
And it was because she loved Orihime so much that she never questioned the way Orihime's mind worked. It made her happy, and that was all that mattered.
But then Orihime had come to her, saying that she would be taking part in some battle that she might never return from. Tatsuki would have insisted to go along, but the look in Orihime's eyes told her that it might only break her heart further if she did, so she refrained.
She decided that she had to know, and she wanted to hear it from Orihime's own lips. Tatsuki posed the question, the one she had always wondered about but had never asked, for fear of disturbing the perfect harmony of their relationship.
Orihime tilted her head, looking at Tatsuki in what seemed to be earnest confusion. After a while, she said, "But that's why we go so well together, Tatsuki-chan!" Tatsuki opened her mouth to ask what Orihime meant, but she was already carrying on.
"You'll always be around to remind me that people can be dangerous," Orihime stated, smiling, "and I'll always be around to remind you that people can be wonderful!"
Tatsuki smiled in response. Orihime's good humor had always been contagious.
Even though she couldn't help but smile because of Orihime, a depressing thought suddenly filled her head.
But what if you're not?
