She didn't know what brought her to his door that evening. All that she knew was that it was too cold, too lonely in her little apartment. She rapped on his door, waiting for it to open.
It finally did, after a while. Gerald stood there in his pajamas, looking back at her. He didn't look surprised. He simply stepped aside so that she could come in.
He let Helga lay on the couch. He was about to go back to his room, but her voice stopped him. "Don't," she said simply. "I don't want to be alone."
So Gerald got a blanket, spreading it out on the floor next to his couch. He lay there, staring at the ceiling, for what felt like hours. He wondered if she was asleep. From the state of her breathing, he thought not.
Before Helga knew it, he was on top of her, and he was kissing her. And, what's more, she was kissing him back. She broke away abruptly.
"I love Arnold," she gasped, trying to catch her breath.
"I know," he replied, leaning in to kiss her again.
