Self-defence course

I'm really excited about taking a self-defense course this coming weekend! It will be at York university (I'll have to figure out how to get there!). I have no idea what it will be like or if it would be good but I would love to learn whatever I can from that course. I found out about it by just searching for "self-defense Toronto." York is far but relatively easy to get to.

Subway it to St. George. Transfer to the University/Spadina line and go all the way to Downsview. There are York U busses from there.

Enjoy!

The bus you want is the 196; the 106 will also get you there but it takes a longer route.

Good for you! Wen-do is a very well-established course and many women have found it valuable.

The interesting thing about learning self-defense is that just by showing confidence in the face of a threat, it is less likely you'll actually have to defend yourself.

The training helps give you confidence and good judgement - talking your way out of situations and/or running away can count as self defence too.

Enjoy the course!

Thanks! Yeah, it did give me a lot more confidence in my body and strength. Their message that even the smallest women can fight and protect themselves against big guys is quite empowering. And yeah, what you wrote, about talking your way out or running away - that's good that they emphasized that a lot too.

Also, good to talk with you!

I took at Wen-Do course back in high school and thought it was great. Some people criticize that it will teach people just enough to THINK they're good and they'll go on to take risks they can't actually defend against but...*shrugs* I think all knowledge of this sort is helpful.

Besides, my course ended up in breaking a board with my bare hand. How cool is THAT?! :D
