In the Kitchen

Apr 14, 2004 06:02

After finishing dinner Ryan went into the kitchen to start on the dishes. He didn't mind. And the load of plates and bowls in the sink was about what he was used to. What he wasn't used to was the hot water straight from the spout. He had gotten used to boiling water over a fire to be used for dishes. And of course someone always ended up ( Read more... )

Gel awoke from her little nap feeling much better. She could hear the sounds of dishes being washed in the kitchen. "Dinner must be over," Gel thought to herself. "I wonder if I can find something that's been leftover," Gel got out of bed and went over to her mirror. She fixed her make-up, which had been wiped off earlier from when she was sick, and straightened herself out. Gel left her room, walked down the hall and into the kitchen. Ryan was there, but Gel didn't know him too well. "Um hi. Is ther any food left?"

Ryan looked up from the dishes as he was addressed. He hadn't heard her enter. "Plenty. Help yourself." He gestured towards the pot on the stove. "Are you feeling better? I saw you in the hospital earlier." He hadn't had a chance to talk to Gel yet. She'd been very brave coming along on the rescue mission to the Chosen house as she had. But aside from that fact it was all he knew about her.

Mouse had heard the water running in the kitchen as someone was doing the dishes. She peeked around the counter and saw Ryan at the sink and Gel standing by the stove. She suddenly felt really shy. "Uhm...Ryan?" She came to stand by the edge of the counter sort of looking at the floor. "Salene's asleep and she normally...uh...tucks me in at night and I was wondering if you would." She could have asked others, but couldn't find anyone else and just knew she wouldn't feel safe if she had to go to sleep without someone telling her things would be okay and get some sleep and all that stuff Salene normally told her.

He smiled at Mouse when she came in. "Sure. I can, if you'd like." He turned off the water and dried his hands. He'd finish the rest of the dishes later. There'd be more anyway if more people drifted in late, so it was okay. He was glad they'd been able to have their conversation earlier and realized he should find a time to talk to her about the kids. What would she think about 2 more girls about her age in the Mall?

Salene shifted, rolling onto her back, the sheets were wrapped around her left leg and rolling over exposed her right leg to the air. This woke her and she opened her eyes groggily, it was dark in her room now, how late was it? She could smell the scent of food, had she missed dinner? There was light talking around her, but nothing loud, it sounded like people were getting ready for bed. How could she have slept so long? Salene pulled herself up into a sitting position and yawned, she was still exhausted, but her stomach was demanding food, and her headache was back full force. She rubbed at her right eye and moved to the edge of her bed, finding her slippers and slipping them on, wrapping her arms around herself, why was she so cold? She went to her dresser and pulled out a gray cardigan, wrapping it around herself before shuffling through her doorway, heading for the cafe. Salene yawned again, crossing her arms over her chest and hugging herself, her eyelids drooping as she walked, oblivious to the voices in Mouse's room, to the ( ... )

GEl looked up as Salene entered. She looked really tired so Gel decided not to bother her. Gel finished up her goulash and brought the bowl over to the sink. She decided that since she hadn't done anything to help out today she would finish the dishes for Ryan.

Maybe when she was done, if Salene looked up to it, Gel would go over and talk to her and tell that she had been sick today. Gel hopped Salene was o.k.

Gel turned the water on and got a cloth to wash the dishes. She enjoyed the feel of the hot water on her hands. She fell into what seemed to be a trance as she washed and rinsed. She remembered what her mom used to do with her when they did the dishes together. She wished her mom was here right now. Gel shook herself out of the trance and finished rinsing the last dish. She picked up a dry cloth and began to dry the dishes and stack them next to the sink.

Night had just settled upon the city like a dark blanket as Ebony found herself at the entrance of the mall. She had taken a longer time than previously anticipated making the journey homeward, thinking through what the best course of action would be when she finally reached the mall. She wanted to speak to Salene, and she'd wanted to do it tonight. During the trek back however, Ebony had given greater consideration to the decision. Salene had said some pretty harsh words to Ebony during the tribal leader debate earlier, and would more than likely be less than receptive to anything she had to say right now. Additionally, the realization that it might be more beneficial to not only wait until Salene had cooled down a bit, but to also spend a few days to gather more useful information to present her with occured to Ebony. Earning Salene's trust was crucial if she had any hope of accomplishing her objectives, and that would be more difficult with what little information she currently possessed ( ... )

Salene put her left elbow on the table and her chin in her left hand, twirling her spoon in the goulash, it was very good, and she was eating it slowly, she was just so tired she couldn't even think to lift the spoon to her mouth. Every bite she took woke her up a little more, and eased her headache, maybe that was her problem, she was just hungry, and she was more than thirsty, surely she was dehydrated, she hadn't had a lot to drink for 4 days, not to mention they had rationed food, maybe she just needed to start drinking more water, though she hated to waste water, even for drinking. Salene yawned and watched the goulash as she carved a shape into with her spoon before taking another bite. She heard the water running and knew it was Gel, she'd seen her move towards the sink, but Salene was too tired to look up, god she wanted out of this funk! Nevermind, it was almost bed time anyway, she should just feed herself and get back to bed, that was the best course of action right now ( ... )

Ebony exhaled and narrowed her eyes slightly as her gaze remained fixed on Salene; the fatigue in her voice mingling with what seemed like a touch of sarcasm. There was just no winning with this woman, thought Ebony with a twinge of disappointment. Her hardened gaze turned into one of acceptance as Salene indicated she would be leaving. There was simply nothing more that could be done this evening, and things could have turned out a lot worse.

Ebony's voice was slightly strained, but devoid of any weighted hostility. "Fine. I have a few things I need to get to myself." Standing up slowly and gathering her bowl and glass; a civil if not slightly discouraged smile forming across her features. "Rest well Salene." Ebony then turned back in the direction of the kitchen, her even footsteps magnifying the unusual silence of the mall.

Salene stood up and gathered her own bowl and glass, leaving the pitcher there, and headed for the sink. "Thank you for doing the dishes Gel, that's very helpful," she said softly, giving the girl a smile. She turned once more to Ebony, "I'm glad we talked, sweet dreams," she added sincerely, glancing at Gel as well once more before turning and heading for her office.

Ebony took one last drink of water before placing her bowl and cup in the kitchen sink. Now pleasantly full, she began to feel herself grow tired. It had been a long day and sleep was begining to sound ever more enticing. There was just one thing she had to do first.
