Waking the Dead

Have finally sat down and watched the final episode Waterloo.

I have absolutely fallen in LOVE with this series.

I recently sent an email to a certain someone trying to explain the absolutely wonderful dynamics that these characters have.

Okay, so for my American friends who have never seen this wonderful show, here's a bit of a run-down.

It's kind of a CSI/Cold Case crossover of WIN.

Add in a bit of Criminal Minds too.

You have 5 main characters (types - a few of the actresses change along the way).

The head guy is Peter Boyd - he's your damaged, angry, gruff Brit cop who doesn't take any shit. He's kind of pigheaded and annoying at times but he cares A LOT about the cases he deals with. He's the head of the dept. And basically their mandate is to solve Cold Cases.

Then you have Spencer Jordan. He's a beat cop turned detective with some issues, a good body, nice tattoes, and a bit of a chip on his shoulder at times. He dives into the cases, conflicts with Boyd, and does a lot of the chase downs. He's a bit like Morgan on CM, but not nearly as suave.

Then you have Spence's partner (so far there have been 2). Both have been female. I liked the first more than the second, but neither is bad. I felt like their characters have been a bit forced though. Mel had some really interesting back story but they never delved into it as much as I would have liked. Stella irks me for a few reasons (many of which have to do with plot stuff).

My favorite is Grace Foley. I LOVE GRACE. Grace is played by Sue Johnston (Remember Me & You). She's an older, Psychiatrist who is now working almost soley as a criminal profiler. Grace is amazingly awesome, a great counter for Boyd (the two of them almost have it out - A LOT), and if it weren't for the fact that she always psychoanalyzes him and has that clinical detachment with him, they would make a GREAT pairing.

The other main team member is the forensic specialist. There have been 3 so far, all female though they seem to like to give them 'guy' names. Frankie - the first - was awesome and rather amusing. She too would have made a nice pairing for Boyd. She would make snarky comments about asking him out for a drink and then telling him he'd never know what he was missing when he turned her down. Felix - 2nd - was awesome, though different, and left after almost getting killed. Now there's Eve. Who is rather snarky and fun. She runs the Body Farm (which in fact is its own series now) and is more comfortable around dead bodies than the living. She smokes like a chimney and is often joked with for being the team addict. The one thing that all of them have in common is that they are the entirety of the forensic team that we really see. Whether it be autopsies, chemical residue, footprints, finger prints, etc they are the one-woman show. So it has the CSI quality but it also explains a lot of the process, because Boyd kind of gets an O'Neill concept at times and acts stupid so that things are explained to him.

Then there are a few other characters that come up from time to time but mostly it's just those 5. And the various victims and cases.

One of the interesting (and at times annoying) things about this series is that one episode is not one story line.  A story line is at least two episodes.  So it's essentially a series of movies.  Really good, really interesting movies where you care about the characters.

So, now, about Waterloo.  I had initially feared the worst with this, being that it wasn't SUPPOSED to initially be a series finale, but rather a season finale.  I was totally prepared for the US style cliff hanger that would leave me royally buggered.  I was VERY pleasantly surprised.  I think this has got to be one of the best series finales that I have ever seen.  It was final, but open-ended at the same time.

Now I need fic for this series.  I've read two of the three on AO3, reading the third now (as it said to wait until after you've seen Waterloo).  This can't be all that there is, can it?  PLEASE point me in the direction if you know of any.
