Been a while since I've wanted to write about what I'm reading. I really slacked in my reading last year so I'm making sure this year will be better in terms of catching up on titles that I've been wanting to read as well as keeping up with what books people are into lately ( Read more... )

I haven't read The Bone Season but after doing some research I doubt that I ever will. It's not that I'm squeamish and I'm not even that adverse to h/c either but to me it sounds like the same old formula that's been in use for millenia. What sets Outlander (and, possibly, according to fanon The Hunger Games) apart is that the male protag is on the receiving end of the rape and torture and not the heroine. So, yeah, I probably won't read The Bone Season because the concept at the same time bores and angers me. It is also the reason I keep away from most shoujo manga these days and particularly from drivel like Diabolik Lovers and other games and anime of that ilk. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that male rape is a-ok but in such a book, if it happens for a reason, like in Outlander, to a) show how villanous the villain really is and b) bring out the heroine's ability to take things into her own hands, I think that, as a plot-point, it can add a great deal to a book.

I'm not sure if that makes me a good or a terrible feminist ^^;;
