I'm surprised the kitties will pick that up in their mouths, and don't mind the texture of it. I'm pretty sure my ferrets would sniff it, then give it the hairy eyeball and skitter away sideways from it.

When touched the slugs roll into a rubbery muscular ball. So the kitten only has to carry it up the stairs and through the hatch. The rest of the way, she can just roll it. That said, I too am surprised that she likes them so, so much. Because SLIME!
