In Character Information

character name: Loki/Gabriel/The Trickster
Fandom: Supernatural
Timeline: after his apparent death in the series
character's age: several thousand years at least, physically appears early 30’s

powers, skills, pets and equipment:

Loki/Gabriel has all the abilities of an archangel of the Lord along with abilities he’s developed to appear to be a pagan god. His abilities are fueled by angelic grace which is innate and inexhaustible.

In his first appearance he demonstrates the ability to physically manifest anything he wants - from candy bars to a convincing Incredible Hulk. His illusions can be applied to himself and Loki can take on any appearance he wishes. He can affect the material world from a distance as demonstrated by making Sam’s laptop disappear and letting all the air out of the tires of Dean’s car. He sits back and munches on candy and popcorn, laughing while Dean and Sam get beaten up by porn stars he created. Loki fakes his death by creating an illusion of himself while he remains invisible, watching the action.

The next time the trickster appears he manipulates time, creating a time loop of a single day that revolves around Sam. He later turns back time a full six months, only Sam being aware of the change in the world. The ability to manipulate time like this is something that the mist of Anatole will have diminished as to be non-existent, something that even Loki won’t realize he’s lost until there comes a situation when he attempts to do it.

When Loki/Gabriel/The Trickster next appears it is clear that his illusions can affect entire areas and are as physically real as anything natural occurring. He creates an entire pocket dimension inside an abandoned warehouse filled with human-seeming illusory characters. He turns Sam into a car with a voice ala Kitt in Knight Rider. He traps Castiel in what seems to be a pocket dimension from which he escapes, obviously wounded in the effort. Like all holy being, Loki/Gabriel can be trapped by holy oil, much as a demonic being can be trapped by a salt line or devil’s trap.

The most information we learn about Loki/Gabriel is in the episode “Hammer of the Gods.” Angels have an ability to “fly” that is similar to teleportation, usually accompanied by the rustling sound of wings. When Loki makes sudden entrances and exits he makes no such sounds. It’s unclear if he’s learned how to silence the effect or if he’s learned another method of instant travel. He possesses an archangel’s sword with ahs the ability to kill both angels and demons. When Dean attempts to say his name in fron of the assembled gods, Loki silences him by cutting off his voice. He creates a DVD out of thin air with a recording of himself on it and appears on it with a porn star he manifested hanging all over him.

There are many abilities that the angels and archangels in the Supernatural verse have been demonstrated to have, which while Loki does not display use of, would also have these abilities. Some of these would include the ability to communicate with other beings of a heavenly origin telepathically, instantaneous healing (of both himself and others), telekinesis, and the exorcism and/or smiting of demonic beings. He could destroy or repair any physical object or make it appear or disappear entirely. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Characters_of_Supernatural#Angels

Normal humans cannot look upon or listen to an angel’s true form - a massive being of light and energy and grace - without burning out their eyes, ears and eventually dieing of overload. As such they take on a human form by possessing a human vessel with their permission. It’s not clear if Loki’s form used to a human or if it a construct he made himself. He makes a reference to getting a face change after he flees heaven, but Castiel still recognizes him for who he is behind that face.

He would also have the ability to sense the basic nature of a person’s being - for example he would identify all shinigami to be some sort of reaper. Loki would also have an extensive knowledge of languages, history, and rituals such as creating wards against different kinds of beings. He’s also shown the ability to hear conversations from long distances - even through walls - and is capable of some level of mind reading.

To sum up, as a being of essentially pure energy that is assuming a human form, Loki has the power to manipulate the reality around him. He’s a master of illusions and creating things out of thin air. While this usually takes the form of tricks, pranks and illusions, he could put it towards more useful purposes with the right motivation.

canon history:

Loki is, as he puts it, in the witness protection program. Millennium ago he was known as the archangel Gabriel and when the in-fighting in heaven got to be too much he left rather than watch his brothers tear themselves apart. Several thousand years ago he took on the identity of Loki, using his powers to blend in with the pagan gods of Earth.

In the fifth season episode “Hammer of the Gods” it is apparent that Loki is known by this identity to other deities and demigods and at one point was the lover of Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction.

When Loki first appears in the series he is fully embedded in the persona of the trickster, using urban myths and articles from National Enquirer as ideas for elaborate pranks. His targets are people he feels need taken down a peg or two and the often deadly pranks have a certain twisted irony to them. A professor who sleeps with his students is thrown through a window by the ghost of one. A man who experiments on animals is devoured by a sewer-dwelling alligator. An asshole jock gets abducted by aliens who probe him and force him to slow dance with them. Loki has been traveling from town to town - possibly on a worldwide scale - playing the same kinds of tricks for an untold number of years when the Winchester brothers first encounter him.

In a later episode he creates a time loop similar to the movie Groundhog Day, forcing Sam Winchester to relive hundreds of days in which he witnesses his brother’s death in order to teach him a lesson about having weakness that are easily exploited.

Loki shows up again a year later pulling the same tricks. He leads them to an abandoned warehouse after the brothers hear a story about a man with anger management issues is killed by a bear, which turns out to be an apparition of the Incredible Hulk. He traps Sam and Dean in an elaborate illusion of TV Land where he forces them to conform to the scenarios. Whether it’s a medical drama, Japanese game show, Herpes commercial, crime procedural, or sitcom - Loki tries to break the boys into going along with the game so that they’ll say yes to being possessed by Michael and Lucifer and end the world. Castiel appears and it’s clear that he and Loki/Gabriel know each other. The brothers eventually trap Gabriel and escape knowing his identity as Gabriel.

When Loki shows up again it’s to rescue the brothers from a trap set up by the deities of several religious traditions because he doesn’t want them to attract Lucifer’s attention and be killed. Loki goes to great efforts to convince them that their plan is a bad idea to no avail. He fakes his death by allowing Kali to stab him with a fake archangel’s sword after she reveals his identity to the group. Only an archangel’s sword can kill an archangel. Loki reappears outside the hotel the trap is laid in and tells Dean how to break the magic that’s trapping them there. Before they can follow through with the escape plan Lucifer appears and mercilessly slaughters every deity he crosses paths with.

Loki reappears in front of Lucifer to occupy his attention while Sam and Dean escape with Kali. Loki/Gabriel tells his brother that he’s not taking any sides in the angel’s war. Loki has come to love humans as his father’s creations and doesn’t want to see them annihilated. He tries to trick Lucifer with an illusion of himself while attacking him from behind. It doesn’t work and Loki is apparently killed by Lucifer’s blade, sacrificing himself so humanity has a chance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Egjb0eNNUzU

Before his death he left Dean with a copy of a porn movie. When they watch it a message from Loki appears, telling them that if they’re seeing it then he’s dead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QjKHGew-es

The wiki also does a good job of summing up the episodes he’s in. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Characters_of_Supernatural#Gabriel

personality:

Loki is a snarky smart-ass. He’s addicted to sweets of any kind and believes that people have what’s coming to them. The body he takes is a short man of average looks, easily able to blend in among normal people. He’s a bit of a bastard, but he’s not evil. Loki has a heart buried underneath his layers of defensiveness and sarcasm.

Playing tricks and pranks is Loki’s favorite pastime. His targets are more like victims since they often die as a result of the just desserts that Loki serves them. While he likes people in general, he’s sees a need for the high and mighty to be brought down a few pegs.

Despite this, Loki has a love for humanity and what they’re capable of. He even sacrifices himself so that they might have a chance to be saved. Loki has spent so much time on earth that he has come to appreciate all the diversity among them. In a way he fells connected to them since God has become absent and humans were his favorite creation. Loki refers to humanity as the new baby when defending them to Lucifer.

Loki has an ironic, biting sense of humor. This is scene in both the pranks he pulls and the jokes he makes at others expense. He calls Lucifer a ‘great big bag of dicks’ and does so with irreverent joy. He loves his family, but hates that they think they need to fight one another and bring about an apocalypse. Loki doesn’t have much respect for those in authority or people who abuse their power.

why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting? When Loki first arrives he’s going to think that Lucifer has trapped him in some pocket hell dimension so it’ll be really interesting to see how he interacts with the other characters. He’s not going to reveal his identity to anyone as an angel until he has a good grasp on what’s happening, if ever.

Network Post Sample: [VIDEO]

[A camera flicks on with an image strait out of a porn film set. Huge bed, red silk drapes, table filled with sweet delights, candles - the works. A short man with slicked back hair steps into the frame from the side, having set the recording device up on a dresser or a tripod. He peers into the camera as if looking for something and a Twix appears in his hand which he unwraps and starts to eat.]

Right. Right. I get it. I do. This is hell.

I’ll admit that this is a bit more creative than I’d expect from you, Luci. Where’s the torture rack? The holy oil? I don’t even hear any screaming.

Hello~o. I though I’d rate a personal appearance at least.

[a pause as the man looks into the camera as if waiting for an answer, consuming a few more candy bars in minutes, a smug smirk playing across his lips]

Well if you won’t come to me then I’ll just have to find you. Never thought you were the type to play hard to get. I’ll tear every last inch of this place apart if you don’t stop me, bro. I know all your tricks… I’ve learned some better ones.

[the man snaps his fingers and looks surprised when nothing happens]

Oh, screw you, Luci. Is that all you’ve got?

[camera abruptly shuts off]

Third Person Sample:

Loki had been hella surprised when he woke up. He’d figured that death was the end. Oblivion. Hasta la vista. Catching a jet plane with no return ticket.

Yet here he was, examining the edges of the strange mist that kept him trapped in this little pocket of hell. Lucifer’s doing, no doubt. Loki no longer had any fear over what the devil would do to him. He was already dead after all. The torture would be a bummer.

There were other inhabitants of this place that he’d noticed. He’d kept his distance, unsure if they were other trapped souls or apparitions or demons. Since there were no obvious signs of mass torture, he figured he was in some kind of holding area until Lucifer got around to him. At least he wasn’t in heaven with Michael and his groupies. Load of pricks, all of ‘em. Listening to the whining up there would be worse than hell.

As much as he studied the mist and poked at it, Loki still had no idea what it was made of. It was a well designed trap, better than anything he’d ever constructed. It was evil and perhaps sentient. He’d walked right into it and immediately fled back out at the cloying ickiness. The memories of his death that had flashed through his head had not been pleasant, to say the least. Effective.

Loki couldn’t learn anything else from staring at the thing and there was a lot more city to explore than the edges. The mist had no breaks that he’d found and he couldn’t go over it either. He hated being trapped. He was the trickster, damn it.

He thought that it was about time to approach another soul - if they were souls. Or he could play with the little gadget he’d found next to him when he woke. Cell phones in hell. Who knew? Luci was keeping up with the kiddo’s tech. Loki had thought morse code was more his speed. Or smoke signals. Where was the fire? Hell was supposed to be a lake of fire, wasn’t it?

Anything else? Gabriel’s going to pretty cautious at first and will probably only refer to himself as a trickster for a long time before he even starts using Loki as a name. Being an archangel is a big deal that he’s been hiding for a hell of a long time, so he’s not going to be revealing any angel-only abilities unless he’s desperate. So… unleashing smartass pagan trickster-guy upon the masses! :D
