I used to live halfway between Cheyenne, the capital of Wyoming, and Laramie. Every year on the anniversary of Shephard's death, when people all over southeastern Wyoming would be sad and regretful and thinking about all of the hurt that Shephard's death caused, Phelps and his 'church' (really just his family) would come up from Kansas and Colorado and protest in our town. Then some national news source would cover it, saying, "People in Wyoming still support the murderers of gay man Matthew Shepard." Believing strongly in freedom, no Wyomingite would stop Phelps, but oh how angering it was to have him come in FROM OUT OF TOWN and make us look like we were for the murder by protesting IN OUR NAME! In Wyoming, murder is rare, with no more than two happening in one year and all of them getting heavy coverage. Even the murder of animals is covered (animal rights are big in Wyoming). That we had a hate crime there stunned the whole state and Phelps is always a painful distraction when Wyomingites try to figure out how to heal.
