Fandom Secrets: Read Secret # 60

Granted, I didn't really get into the fandom until around... October.  I'd spent the months in between the release of the movie and starting writing Naturalized more or less trying to talk myself out of it.

But... am I missing something?  I seem to recall those interim months being no more active than they are now.  ( Read more... )

It broke my heart reading #60 because the fact of the matter is, I feel the same way too - granted, I've never seriously done RP (I'm very bad at it) but I used to go on some of the TF fansites looking for 2007 stuff A LOT and now the only one I visit is tf2007fun here at LJ but even then it's not that often ( ... )

Hmm... I guess I'm a hard gauge because I never read that many fics in this fandom to begin with. I suppose in my case I'd found Dwimordene and caelum, and was more or less "this isn't bad, these people can join a string of words together coherently, guess I'll join in!" Had absolutely no idea at that point that anything I came up with would end up anywhere near so... epic (speaking of long XD).

All the same, I suppose I never read that much, certainly not as much as I write (which makes me bad in a community sense. Bad!), but I have a tendency to not read a whole lot for most fandoms, as I feel like there's something... actively detrimental about reading bad writing. But another thing is I generally don't read G1 or Animated fic, not that I don't particularly care about those franchises (I don't about G1, really, I like Animated well enough, especially Starscream) but I have absolutely zero interest in seeing those universes expanded upon. Movieverse, for all its damn silliness, leaves a lot open for actually having something ( ... )

So...detrimental in a sense that it's like watching reality TV rather than David Attenbrough? ;)
I don't think it's a good or bad thing if you read fic or not - to each their own. I do remember my friend was really addicted (and I actually mean addicted) to Harry Potter fanfic but that's like a worse case scenario - I like reading fic because it usually reflects the writer's thoughts about certain aspects of canon/fandom (but then again that is what you have forums for).

I sort of want to take that thing about Animated back only because I hadn't seen that week's episode yet and I was feeling grumpy ;_; - but I agree that Animated doesn't go into as many directions as movie!verse does (which is why I suppose I loved 'Bicentennial Man' and 'I, Robot' so much in that within only about 90 minutes they have work through the plot but can't sum up all the details whereas a series can have more happening but usually stray bits and pieces are tied up).

I joined in June, and I have to agree that all the good stuff's mostly disappeared. Now it's all Prowl/Jazz and full of characters that I've never even heard of.
I want my movie fiction back, too.

Although, on a good point, the fic's that have managed to keep going from then are turning out really well (and no, I'm not ass-kissing).

Arrrg arrrgg arrrg I have to edit that comment it has a misplaced apostrophe and it bugs the hell out of me when other people do that.

There was good stuff right after the movie? It's weird, because the movie community is still the most active of the three, but I confess the vast majority of the stuff that gets posted I don't read. I suppose my theory's been Sturgeon's law from the outset, 90% of everything is, and always has been, crap. Granted Dwimordene doesn't post anymore, and caelum is... shall we say, glacial. David Hines only posted the once that I'm aware of... hmm... I suppose my pre-September knowledge is lacking.

Though I admit, I almost never look on ff.n anymore.

In June it was about 70% crap, but now it's about 95% and that seems to be stable, so I guess Sturgeon's law still applies overall.
Mind you, I tend to avoid the Pit like the plague, so my figures might not be so accurate.

...is it sad that I don't find most of those fandom secrets either witty or funny, even the anime ones where I know what they're talking about? I dunno about #60...damn when did I actually start hunting for fic for this movie? September? Yeah. Conna's story was actually the first one I ever read and was so impressed with it, I was encouraged to actually wade through the Pit to see what else I could find, and I found a lot I liked! Including Naturalized of course :) It does seem though that it's dried up a little, I was poking through the front couple pages on ff.net last night and there wasn't a single one that I couldn't peg immediately as Mary Sue, self-insert, pointless robot romance, or just plain stupid. Many were still movieverse as opposed to G1, they just sucked. So I kind of see what they're saying, but there are still good people writing, so I have hope ( ... )

Although I will amend, some of these secrets ARE dead-on, such as #32 for Twilight. So, so true.

Well, most people who post on fandomsecrets are pathetic shutins with no life! Or trolls. Or weaboos and I have no idea what they're talking about. But I suppose that one just popped out to me because I'm like, wait, it's still pretty active! I'm still here, aren't I? Posting all diligently and once a week-like? Sometimes even twice!

And who are these BNFs who've apparently disappeared, I wonder?

Yaknow... I have little qualms with most of these 'secrets', but the ones that are just ZOMFG I HATEZ TEH PPLZ WHO LIEKZ THIZZZ... need to get of the internet for a while. Immediately. Go out. Get possessed by a spirit of some bitch that burned to death a century ago. Get arrested by the cops for vandalism by silly string. Stay up for 52 hours straight to compare sunrises and sunsets from different parts of town. Talk with a den of drunks sober at 3AM in skidrow. Spend a day riding the bus through the worst parts of town and listen to people talking about how they're surviving the horrid situations they ultimately have no one to blame but themselves for. Spend a day riding the bus through the worst parts of town and watch people give generously to one another, even when they have little to nothing themselves. Find out what is truly beautiful and truly horrid in this world, then, try to say you hate someone for something they happen to like.
