Every time I see Wall-e I'm reminded of Johnny 5 from Short Circuit

That was an incredibly adorable trailer though. That's a definitely a must see for me when it comes out.

I'm probably the odd one out here in that I usually detest robot movies/shows/stories/whatever (or even just robots IN movies or whatever) :B. I usually avoid them; for example, I still haven't seen Iron Giant, nor do I ever plan to. Generally speaking, mecha animes/mangas make my skin crawl. I'll probably see Wall-E eventually because it does look cute, and it's Pixar.
I'm still not sure how I got sucked into Transformers, seeing as I dislike robot movies and I'm not overly excited about vehicles. I'm weird like that :p.

hmm...favorite movie robots? Pretty much any of the Star Wars (original trilogy) droids. I love 'em to death.
I suppose HAL doesn't technically count XD. But he's up there in my list of 'favorite machines' (we named our first family computer HAL. Bad idea).
Data is pretty cool, I'll admit. Not sure I liked the robots in A.I., but the premise of it was interesting ( ... )

You just can't do cultural things with animated movies. Because, you know, animated movies are for kids and kids won't get it, and their parents will be mad :p.

Oh, the I, Robot movie was plenty fun :}. It had enough nonsense to be entertaining (yeah, Will Smith, can't go wrong with him).
I still haven't seen the Terminator movies either, or the Matrix movies beyond about half of the first one. >> Man I'm behind the times.

I have to say I found myself in very similar situation as dinogrrl when I got into Tf's, it seemed very much 'not my thing', and yet, perversely, it totally was of course. Freaky.

It so much that I've ever disliked robot films in particular, it was just that I've always felt a bit queasy about scifi in general, and my reason for this is very similar to singealiene's apparent pet peeve:
there's really nothing that makes me roll my eyes like a "robots became sentient and decided to overthrow their masters" narrativeI just find it completely implausible that 'super aliens hell bent on cold warfare only' or 'emotional & brave!Humanz saving teh whole World with their LUV' thing. Sorry for the netspeak, but I just find it that aggravating. It's the whole 'sensible logical' vs. 'erratic emotional' thing: it is a great big illusion to try to separate the two and create a sensible creature/character, when ( ... )

Heya, wandered over here from your FF stories. That trailer is death-by-cute levels of excellence and I can't wait to see the film, thanks for posting it ( ... )

Oh, movie Prime. Movie Prime, movie Prime, movie Prime. Yeah, I don't much know what to make of him, either. It's like they were on the right road but kept veering off into the ditch over and over. I think the inconsistency alone is enough to knock him down a few notches. Of course you could say the same for poor Bumblebee and his R. Kelly fetish... sigh.

I agree with you on The Day The Earth Stood Still purely on an execution level. The Iron Giant, to me, had just as profound a message, it just executed it more subtly. With the Day the Earth Stood Still we're going movie movie movie movie, then we have alien-Jesus (some more), and then he basically stands up explains the moral of the movie to us. I really admire that the alien describes their robot-run police state as a good thing, and freedom-loving Hollywood doesn't paint that as bad, but it is rather flawed ( ... )

...do I want to see it? I don't see what could be worse than seeing Starscream go out like a little bitch (with a cape on). Man the writers must have hated him.

I loved The Iron Giant <3
And I only recently saw I, Robot, too.
I liked that much better than the Matrix. In my head, I could totally see that as a precurser to the robots in the Matrix. After all, VIKI was only doing what was necessary to ensure humanities survival, reguardless of what humans wanted themselves.
Keeping them indoors, with curfews, etc. isn't all that far away from keeping them in pods (more secure, easier access to how well their bodies are functioning) and keeping them in a state of suspended animation while living in a dream (keeping them mentally happy and stimulated).
Is it just me?

and Wall-E makes me squee with joy. I think he'd my fav Pixar chara yet XD
that part with the bra won my heart

That's why I like I, Robot as a concept, or at least condone it, because VIKI was doing what she was programmed to do. This is what kills me about these robots overpowering us narratives- a computer will do what you tell it to. Or break. One or the other, it will not short-circuit itself into self-awareness, and immediately decide that humanity needs to go!

And of course let us not forget lecherous little Shiapet getting his ass getting handed to him by angry robots. Again. ;)

But the thing that really kills me about the Matrix is the whole sun thing. WE. NEED. SUN. TO. SURVIVE. Nonono, I don't care what you synthesize, SUN = ENERGY. You cannot BLOCK IT OUT, movie! And even when that does happen, it DOES NOT LAST long but while it does MASS CLIMATE SHIFT AND EXTINCTION. HELLO. I'm all about glaring plot devices if there's a good point to the whole thing, but come on!

You cannot block out the sun. Even battery-powered us would die.

Also, uh, we consume more energy than we produce? Hello?

Gah, damn movie make no sense... Sorry ( ... )

One or the other, it will not short-circuit itself into self-awareness, and immediately decide that humanity needs to go!Yes, exactly, though whether that's what happened in Terminator is arguable since they never elaborated beyond "it became self-aware on such and such date and time". Presumably that military Skynet thing had been programmed with learning and self-teaching software and so I suppose eventually...somehow...oh I don't know, it's circuitry and software! I'll believe it when I see it. Alien life form though? Okay, that I'll buy. Though it's interesting how the premise of G1 is exactly that: slave robots created by Quintessons, gain self awareness somehow and overthrow their masters and take over Cybertron. This irritates me about G1 because it is yet ANOTHER "wow, only organics can create robots and look, the robots kill!" plotline. I really do prefer the movie idea of how they come to be, no matter how much of a plot device the Allspark is ( ... )
