~ Previous Chapters ~ Chapter 20: Jejussi and Baby’s Day Out
Kim Junsu was having a drink by himself. Even after moving to Seoul for more than a year he still didn’t have many friends that he could hang out with. Changmin was always busy with his family drama and also the business he ran for his father in law. And the other adults that he had gotten acquainted with were mostly his patients’ parents. He didn’t like to hang out the nurses too, they were always talking about the latest drama or celebrities they met on the streets.
And accepting Changmin’s offer for a matchmaking dinner with his brother in law last month was disastrous. Yunho didn’t even talk to him on their first meeting over dinner, didn’t ask him a single question, obviously he was trying to show that he’s not interested in him and too busy stealing glances at Jaejoong who also seemed to be drowned in his own thought. Which was confusing for him; considering that it was clear from Yoochun’s body language that they’re lovers. Indeed, Changmin had told him everything about the love triangle but was there any other reason why there was an awkward tension between the three of them that night? He didn’t want to think much about it though, Yoochun was kind enough to involve him every the conversation through the night.
He thought he was just being unlucky, so he didn’t refuse another offer from Changmin for his birthday party 2 days later. But it’s proven to be worse. Yunho neglected him completely since he stepped into the mansion and constantly by Jaejoong’s side and his children all the time. To make it worse, Yoochun was not there. Though Changmin and his wife tried hard to make him feel comfortable, it’s very difficult for him to shake off his uneasiness, especially after seeing Jaejoong having a father and son talk with Yunho’s father. Whatever they were talking about, both men looked flustered when they walked back in but things were back to normal in no time, thanks to the little angel Jung Moonbin who lighted up the party with his non-stop chatter.
But not for him. He left before desert. He was uncomfortable and unwanted. No need for him to hang around longer. He should call Changmin though, he didn’t want the guy to feel guilty, he didn’t intend to; just concerned about him being lonely in big old Seoul city.
To tell the truth, it’s not that he hates it here… he loves his job and he had more challenge too in the small clinic. It concerned him though that most of the problems he found from his little patients were related to mental stability. Including Jung Moonbin though it’s pretty much solved now, he could from his interaction with his father, sister and… well, Jaejoong whom he called Jejussi. ‘Aaarggh’ he groaned to himself… those people really did a good job to make him feel like an intruder at the party. He sighed…. And pretty much was about to make a pity of himself when he felt a tap on his left shoulder.
“Well, well, well, is if itsn’t doctor Kim Junsu! Moonbin’s favorite pediatrician and Changmin’s ducky-hyung?”
He looked up into Park Yoochun’s mischievous eyes in surprise, “Yoochun-ssi!”
“Hey, what’s with the -sshi! I thought I made myself clear that Yoochun is enough if we’re really going to be friends.” He gave a playful slap on the shoulder.
Junsu laughed, “Alright, Yoochun it is. But quit it with the ducky-hyung will you! Aish… I hope Changmin hadn’t told you anything embarrassing anymore.”
“Ha! Believe me I’ll try… “ he winked. “So, you got company? Or you don’t mind if I become one then we can mourn for our lonely life together?”
“Seat’s empty and you’re more than welcomed to stay.” He’s telling the truth. “Did I hear lonely? Jaejoong-ssi’s not going to join?”He saw that Yoochun’s face hardened though he tried to hide it.
“It’s Moonbin’s first sleepover after 3 months this weekend. He’s picking him up at the mansion tonight. I’ll let them have their bonding, they’ve been missing each other like nuts!” he snorted.
“Poor guy. I could see at the party last month, they acted as if they haven’t seen each other for 10 years ,” he chuckled. “And why weren’t you there?”
“Some stuf at the office needs my attention. It’s not easy running a company full of teenagers and youngsters, especially if their dorms are in the same building.” He ordered his drink turned his attention to the other guy sitting next to him.
“So, what’s new? Like it here in the big city?”
And the conversation lasted till midnight… become the first of many to come… And suddenly living in Seoul didn’t seem so bad anymore for one Kim Junsu.
* * * * *
Jaejoong was running very very late. He was supposed to pick up Moonbin at the Jung Mansion and was already halfway there with the driver when he got a call from one of the junior managers. Lee Joon was caught sneaking a girl into the dorm and somehow the girl’s parents found out and came in in fury with a police officer. He had to return right away and took care of it. Fortunately JiHye didn’t mint to take the boy instead to his home, then Changmin could pick her up on the way home.
This time Yoochun really needs to have a talk with the boy or he’d get the whole company into trouble. The girl’s parents decided not to file a lawsuit after much persuasion and a lot of apology from Jaejoong. But it would be big trouble if the media find out and the news leaked, and an officer already involved. He’s giving him a migraine.
He rushed through his door and saw JiHye and Changmin sipping on hot chocolate, his baby not in sight.
“Where’s Binnie?” He asked them.
Changmin shook his head at the boy’s bedroom’s direction, “Sleeping. It’s already 11pm you know. And I guess we should get going too.”
He stood up and reached out for his wife’s hand. “Come, let’s get home.”
JiHye took his hand. She brought the cups to the kitchen sink and Jaejoong told her to leave them there, he’ll wash them.
Jaejoong walked them to the door. Changmin gave him a hug while JiHye kissed him, “Night Oppa, sleep tight. Don’t tire yourself out tomorrow with the little monster.”
He smiled at her, “Thanks honey, you’re still going for apartment hunting tomorrow?”
“Yes we are. Umma and Appa will be home to help Hee Joon ahjumma watching over Min Young. Yunho Oppa will be on location the whole day, so it’s a good thing that Binnie’s staying over.”
“I’m glad that everything’s settled. Now get going, it’s getting cold. Bye…” He waved at them before he closed the door.
He looked around and decided to do the dishes first. And maybe to make some ramyeon, he didn’t have time to drop by any restaurant, and only bars still opened at this hour on a Friday night. But he needed to check on his baby.
He went inside Binnie’s room and saw the boy sleeping soundly on his bed. He looked at the bedside table, there’s a square thing wrapped in a gift paper. A present? He sat by the bed looking at the little angel in front of him… he caressed his cheek and the kid scrunched up his face. He never thought that one day he would ever feel this way to any children though he dreamed of having one. Just what in the world that he would do to make sure that he lived a happy life… ensure him a bright future… him and his sister. Was this how his parents felt for him too? He leaned down and inhaled the boy’s scent before he landed a kiss on his forehead.
He will move him to hid bed later… but now, he really need some food. He sighed and went outside to make himself some instant ramyeon.
* * * * *
Moonbin woke up in the embrace of his beloved Jejussi. Oh boy, he was still mad at him for being home late and not picking him up on his first sleepover in 3 months! But Jejussi looked very tired… his mouth opened a little and, aaahh! His arm was so heavy, he needed to get up to pee!
He tried to remove Jejussi’s hand from his tummy and luckily Jejussi didn’t wake up. He ran to relieve himself, eh! How come he’s at Jejussi’s bathroom? This is Jejussi’s bedroom! Didn’t his Noona & Hyung put him on his own bed last night? Oh well… he didn’t mind. At least he slept well despite missing Min Young already. But he missed Jejussi mooooooreee…
He went out of the bathroom and looked around… what’s missing? Aha! The gift!! He quietly went out to his own bedroom. Where’s the gift, where’s the gift, where’s the gi- there it is! JiHye-noona must be the one who put it on his bedside drawer. He wanted to give it to Jejussi last night and let him opened it himself to be surprise but he had a better idea now. Why not he opened it and put it on Jejussi’s nightstand so he could see it the moment he woke up? Oooh, he’s really smart just like Gamma and Gappa said!
Appa never said he’s smart, but he said he’s proud of him anyway because he’s been a very good brother to Min Young. How couldn’t he? Min Young is soooo pretty, and he loved her chubby cheeks though he hates it when the baby burped after her milk. It stinks! Appa said that he did the same when he was a baby… he didn’t believe him.
He unwrapped the gift and threw the wrapping papers into the trash bin. He looked at it affectionately… he really loved it. He was sure that Jejussi would love it too. He quickly walked back to Jejussi’s bedroom and tiptoed to the bed. He placed the gift carefully on the nightstand. Hmm, didn’t look right? Oh, he should turn it a little to face the bed, so when Jejussi woke up he would see it right away. He stifled his giggle as he re-arranged his gift on the nightstand. There! Perfect!
Now… he still couldn’t read the clock but it’s still a little dark outside. Jejussi promised that they’re going to spend the whole day playing outside. He’s so excited but actually he prefer to spend more time cuddling and camping out in the living room. He had so much to tell Jejussi about Appa and Min Young. And the goldfish pond that froze last month, and Kibum-ahjussi who made him a very nice pancake last week. And Gappa who bought him a lot of pop-up books, and Gamma who sang him lullaby before he slept - but only when he begged him to, and- and- ooooh! Would he have enough time to tell him everything until he had to return home tomorrow?
He frowned… why can’t Jejussi just live with them? He thought Jejussi loved him and Min Young… and he’s Gappa’s Son too, isn’t he? Though he still don’t understand why he’s not a Jung like him, everyone in the house treated him like Appa, including Kibum-ahjussi and all the maids Then why should he live somewhere else? He asked Appa once and Appa said that Jejussi had ‘his own life’ and he shouldn’t aske him that question, ever! He sighed… maybe it’s the ‘adult thing’ that Noona always told him when he tried to join in Appa’s conversation with Gappa and Gamma? But what if- what if Jejussi decided to have another boy to have his room because he hadn’t sleepover for along time now?
Aaaarrghhh! It’s all giving him headaches! Isn’t it what’s it called when your head feel so full with many thoughts? He wanted to wake up Jejussi, he couldn’t wait for their weekend to start… but he’ll just let him sleep some more. He’s not hungry for breakfast yet and he could get some milk from the fridge by himself. He hoped Jejussi remembered to buy his milk. He got out of the bedroom and walked to the fridge… he opened it and voila! There, rows of his favorite vanilla milk… Yoohoo!! He took one and walked to the living room, in front of the TV… maybe he should continue watching the Sesame Street DVD that he got from doctor Kim, Noona said she would bring it… ah, she put it on the player already. Doctor Kim was nice, not scary, he liked him… and he sounded funny too when he laughed…
Ummm, here’s the remote control… He still remembered how to turn it on… There! Ooops! The volume’s too big! He frantically searching for the TV’s remote and quickly turned down the volume as he looked at Jejussi’s bedroom door. He didn’t get out… phew! He was close to waking him up! Sorry Jejussi… Heyyyyy! It’s Cookie Monster!!
He settled himself on the large sofa, milk on his left hand, remote control on his right. Ah… Jejussi could sleep some more, he’s going to enjoy the movie. He just hoped he’s already wake up when it’s finished.
* * * * *
Jaejoong woke up startled by the blasting sound from the living room! And he realized that Moonbin’s not on the bed anymore… The kid must be waking up early and got bored so he decided to watch some movies. He let his body fell back on the bed. It’s still a little dark outside, which meant he just had at least 4 hours of sleep only. After his quiet instant dinner he took his time for a hot bath and moved the baby to his bedroom. He felt so content to be able to hold him again and inhaling his baby scent.
He took his time in caressing the baby’s features… from his eyes, his nose, his cheeks. It’s only been 3 months but felt like 3 years they hadn’t been together. He always thought of him, and usually couldn’t sleep well after a video call with the boy. Like… it’s not enough to see him, he wanted to touch him and kiss him, and… geez! Why did I talk about my baby like a lover! Oh gosh, this is so NOT good. The boy had his own family. And he had Yoochun. And speaking of Yoochun… he terrible felt confuse. He was sure that he had made the right decision to have a relationship with the guy, he knew he loved him but why was it after not seeing him for a while he didn’t miss him that much?
He missed his presence alright, but not like he missed his baby. It hurt him that see the painful look the other man gave him everytime their conversation turned into a little argument regarding his attachment to the Jungs. It’s not that Yoochun didn’t understand, he could say that he’s the one who understood most about his tie with the Jungs. He’d been there for him even before they went steady. But it’s still not enough for him. Though in the end Yoochun always seemed to accept his argument and gave in into his pleas, somehow deep inside Jaejoong wished that Yoochun could be a little selfish and tell him what he actually wanted instead of giving in to him. That’s what’s called an equal relationship, wasn’t it. But he could feel their relationship was crumbling away… they have to have a talk about it, like it or not.
He got up to stretch and saw something on the bed stand that wasn’t there when he went to bed last night. He reached out and took it… and he stared into something that made him teary eyed first thing in the morning. It was a silver frame about a size of a novel. In the picture Jaejoong was sitting in the living room of the Jung mansion, carrying Min Young in his arms with a smile on his face. Moonbin was standing beside him on the sofa, leaning down with his left hand on Jaejoong’s shoulder and another was trying to poke Min Young’s cheek. The baby girl’s arms were waving in the air as if trying to get his brother’s. On the far right of the picture, behind him, Yunho was laughing while looking at them with his right arm holding his mother who had the same expression on her face.
Is this his family now?
To tell the truth, he hadn’t given his answet to Appa Jung’s request. It’s been a month but he’s still not sure of anything. On one hand he’s happy, the Jung senior made him feel like he belonged. He could have more time to spend in his spare time for Moonbin, he could help watching over min Young too. He wouldn’t have to worry about late night dinner, just like Changmin was he noticed that Kibum was also very helpful and wouldn’t mind to get some leftover heated in the microwave for him. It would be very convenient; he’s no stranger to he household after all.
But on the other hand, he couldn’t imagine living under the same roof with Yunho once again. Especially that Changmin and JiJHye won’t be there anymore. But mostly he couldn’t live in the same place thinking that Soon Mi was once living there too. He didn’t hate the woman, but painful memory was hard to forget; not to mention one that changed your entire life and future. For a moment he did feel like he’s being used… to make him leave and ask him to return like that. But then again, what’s a better solution back then? They didn’t ask him to leave, it was his choice. And it was painful for them as well. So what should he do? What kind of answer should he give the older Jung?
He’ll think about it later, right now he had to thank Moonbin for the beautiful picture. He wiped the tears that he didn’t realize he had shed and went to the bathroom to wash his face. When he was sure that there’s no more trace of tears, he went out to the living room, bringing the framed picture along with him.
“Hey baby, watching Sesame Street?” He told him.
The boy jumped from the sofa and ran to him, jumped on his arms when he was near, “Jejussi!! You woke up!” Then the endless kissing between them. More like a ritual.
“Yeah, I woke up to Elmo’s singing…”
The boy’s smile faltered, “Oh, I really woke you up… I’m sorry…”
He carried the boy to sit on his lap on the sofa. “That’s okay… since you gave me a present… you brought the picture for me?”
He nodded happily, “Uh-huh! Coz Jejussi don’t have picture of Min Young but only me! It’s not fair for Min Young coz now Jejussi know her too!” He explained to him in earnest.
“Thank you baby,” he kissed his nose. “I love it, really. I’ll put it in the nightstand so I can look at it everytime I wake up and before I go to bed.”
But the boy frowned, “I can’t find a picture with just the three of us. You can see Appa and Gamma in the back, why did they have to stand thereeeeee,” he whined.
Jaejoong laughed, “Well, then maybe next time we should have another picture, just the three of us, what do you say? For now, let’s say that I got a little bonus in the picture.”
He still frowned, “Owww kayyyy… So where do we go today? You said that we’re going to be out the whole day? It’s not cold anymore?” He quickly changed the subject and returned to his main interest, playing outside.
“Well, I want to take you to a place called LOTTE World.”
Moonbin screamed in delight. “I’ve seen it! I’ve seen the pictures in Noona’s magazine! The place is big,” he squirmed his way down to the floor and jumping up and down in front of Jaejoong, “Let’s get ready Jejussi, let’s go! If we don’t go now I won’t be able to ride everything, pleaseeeeee…”
The older man laughed louder, “Easy baby. It’s not going to open so soon. Why don’t you go take your own bath while I prepare some sandwich and drinks for or snack over there. Well?” He raised his eyebrow at the boy.
Moonbin didn’t waste anytime as he ran to his own bedroom to take a bath.
“And no express shower! Remember how turn on the hot water?” he yelled from his seat.
He could hear the boy yell, “OWWWW KAAAAY!!” once again from the bedroom.
He chuckled as he walked to the same place. He better get his clothes ready on the bed rather than let the boy pick his own. He inherited Yunho’s messy clothes coordination. Despite being a good looking actor, the guy was hopeless when it came to fashion. It was him who prepared his clothes when his coordi was unavailable and JiHye took over the job after he moved out. And now he had to do the same for his son… Tsk, like father like Son.
And so the fun would begin.
* * * * *
Yunho was about to say goodbye to his parents, he’s going to the location for some shooting. He had to remind his mother that it’s time for Min Young’s monthly check-up at the hospital But then he overheard his parents conversation in the family room and couldn’t believe what he heard. He barged in and asked his father in an unfriendly tone, “You did what Appa? How could you?”
His parents seemed too surprise to see him and didn’t reply to him right away.
“You asked Jaejoong to return to this house? Are you out of your mind!”
His father sighed, “Yunho sit down. And don’t raise your voice at me. Listen to my explanation will you?” He calmly told him without getting up from his seat.
“I don’t’ need to hear your explanation! There shouldn’t be any explanation! You’re going overboard! It was us that made him leave and now you asked him back here? What is he to you anyway? Do you really think of him as a Son?”
“Yunho!” His mother called his name in shock. “Do you really think of your father that way?”
“Well, what else can I say? Are you using my Son to get him back here too to become Min Young’s nanny? Did you know how much he suffered when he walked out of this place 5 years ago? How could you ask him such big favor Appa, how could you?”
“I told you to listen to me first. Now sit and calm down. Let me talk.” The old man tried hard to tell him his side of the story. But Yunho was so furious at him.
“I don’t need to. I’m going now, I’m going to tell him to forget whatever you asked of him! It’s ridiculous!” He turned his heel walked hastily to the front door.
His father got up and tried to run after him, “Yunho, wait! Listen to me!”
He caught the sleeve of Yunho’s shirt just as he walked out of the door. But at that time Yunho was already stepping down on the porch and his father slipped his foot on the top step. He lost his grip on Yunho’s shirt and fell down the 10 stone steps down.
His mother and the garderner who happened to be mowing the land screamed. Yunho’s face became white as he jumped to where his father was. Blood was trickling down his temple… his mother was crying and screaming at the same time next to him.
He yelled at the maid to call an ambulance. No more shooting today. JiHye should take Min Young, they’re going to the hospital together.
Yunho cried as he held his father, ‘Oh god, let him be okay, please! I should’ve listened to him first.’ It’s another long day in the life of Jung Yunho.
* * * * *
Jaejoong heaved a long sigh as he sat himself down at one of the bench in the gigantic them park. He’s exhausted Binnies had been acting like an energizer bunny without running out on energy at all.
“Jejussi, Binnie wants to play hopscotch over there, okay?”
He nodded his approval at the boy, “Okay, I’ll be here and watching you. And don’t climb by yourself!”
The boy was already running away, “Ok, ok!”
He huffed and massage his thighs and legs…
“Your son exhaust you?” A gentle voice was heard by his side. He turned his face and saw an old lady sitting on the other side of the bench.”
“Ah, yes… I didn’t know that a 3 year old can be more energetic than myself.” He didn’t bother to explain that he’s not Binnie’s father. She’s just a stranger anyway. But out of politeness he asked her, “You’re here with your daughter and granddaughter too?”
He asked the question as he noticed the woman was around 50 years old, a little younger than Yunho’s Mom but definitely not 40 anymore. And if she sat the the same bench tha meant she’s watching one of the children in that played with Moonbin now, none of them were more than 5 years old.
“My granddaughter, see that girl with the ponytail and yellow jumper? That’s the one… Poor girl had to grow with her grandparents.” She gazed at her sadly.
Jaejoong’s a bit curious now, “Oh, where are her parents?”
“My daughter- her mother, left her with me when she was 4 months old. His good for nothing husband commited suicide and hung himself at their home after losing his job.” She looked up at the sky, “She said that she’ll get a job and return to bring her back to live with her. It’s been five years, and the last news that I heard of her was that she took a flight out of the country to god knows where… one of the neighbor’s son met her at the airport. Since then, we never heard of her anymore.”
Jaejoong regretted his question, “Oh, I’m sorry that I asked something that made you sad.”
She smiled at him, “Sad? Yeah, maybe I’m sad for my daughter to be so stupid and leaving her precious girl behind. But I’m not sad for my granddaughter. She’s mine and my husband’s treasure.”
He pondered for a moment before he asked her again, “Isn’t it… hard? To take care of a child in your age?”
She looked at him earnestly, “Is it hard for you and your wofe to take care of your son?”
“No! I mean, his mother had… passed away… last year.” He gazed lovingly at his baby boy. “So it’s just… me and him.”
“I see… so it should be the same between us. Children are gifts from God. They exist to show us miracles to help us get through the day… The key to raise a child is to love him unconditionally. Never ever hope of anything for your benefit from him… Let him grow up, but guide him. Let him know when he makes a mistake but never raise your hand on him.”
The old lady turned to look at him again, “You know, it wasn’t easy for me and my husband to raise her, very hard. We’re already past 50, we lived off from my husband’s pension only and raising a child is expensive now. But we tried hard to give her the best so she would always feel loved. When a child feel loved, he or she would do the same to make you feel loved too, by doing their best to make you happy.”
Jaejoong felt that it’s going to be a long conversation. And 30 minutes later, Jaejoong already spilled the story of his life to the grandmother. He felt so ease and content, she looked sincere and wise. Their conversation only stopped when the old lady’s granddaughter came to her.
“Halmeoni, let’s go back home now! Haraboeji must be waiting for us to have dinner.” She hugged her grandmother tight.
She rubbed her back, “If you say so… let’s go home.”
“Yay!” The girl picked up her little backpack and ran ahead.
The old lady turned to Jaejoong once again and told him, “Remember, when it comes to a child’s life, a real parent would do anything to make him happy. No matter what people may say, his child’s welfare would come first. The question that you should ask yourself, will you be happy with your decision? Will he be happy with your decision too? Doesn’t matter with what others would say, only you can answer that question.” She nodded at him once again and walked behind the trail of his granddauther who’s been calling her to come.
The dusk was settling… and Jaejoong looked up at the purple sky… he knew his answer. It’s been there all along.
But as he was about to call Moonbin to get back home, his phone rang. He looked at the caller ID, JiHye. He pushed the green button, “What’s up honey?”
JiHye was crying… 20 seconds later he already gathered up all his stuff and ran to pick up Moonbin. This time Moonbin would come along to the hospital.

Chapter 21
