Side Story 2: The Pediatrician & The CEO

“There you go! Next time you should drink your medicine on time and don’t hide it anymore, okay? As much as I love you, I don’t want to see you around in my clinic so soon.” Junsu winked at the little patient in front of him. Trying hard to hold back his tears. He’s the doctor, he should be the one to motivate his patients.

The 7 year old nodded weakly but she smiled at him warmly, “Yes doctor Kim. I promise that I won’t hide it anymore even if it tasted yucky. But I can still call you when I miss you, can’t I?” she gave him a hopeful look.

“Who says you can’t? I can also come over on my weekend to see you, honey. Now, take care will you.” He stroked the girl’s head, balding over chemotherapies and radiation in early age. The girl’s skin is too pale to his liking and he didn’t miss the dark lines under her eyes. Must be countless of sleepless nights again, fighting back the pain that she had to endure in her young age.

“Now why don’t you wait with Appa for a minute outside, honey? I need to speak with dr. Kim a little.” The girl’s mother gently told her as the father rolled her out from the examination room.

As soon as she’s out of sight, she turned around and bowed to Junsu. “Thank you so much dr. Kim, you’ve done so much for her. I know you’re busy, so a phone call to her is fine, you don’t have to come so often to our place, really.”

Junsu smiled weakly to her, “No need to thank me Ma’am! I don’t deserve it, I’m not her specialist doctor anyway, I was just helping to make her feel better emotionally, but…” he felt choked, unable to continue.

“Doctor, you’ve done more than enough. That’s what she really needs. We don’t know how long will she be around, could be tonight, could be tomorrow… but at least she feels better anytime she sees you. And we’re thankful for that. So… I have a little favor to ask if you don’t mind.”

He cocked his head a little, frowning, “Let me know if there’s anything else that I can do for her. I’ll be glad to do it if I’m able to.”

“The hospital says that her time won’t be long… 2 months the longest… And when the time comes, will you… “ She bowed once again, “will you stay with us by her side on her final moments, please?”

“Mrs. Choi, I-“

“I know that you feel you didn’t do much for her. But doctor… she used to be so depressed when she had to go back and forth to the hospital, she hated doctors so much cause she thought that they made her suffer. But you’re the first that she came to like that she even said she felt better just talking to you and had you smile at her. We’ll be very happy if she can also feel better at her last moment with you by her side.”

Junsu was at a loss for words. This is too much. He feels that he should say something good, but all that he can say is, “You know my mobile. It’s on 24/7.”

“Thank you doctor, we really appreciate it. And we’re sorry if it’s such a burden for you.”

“It’s… not. Don’t worry, I love her. Now take care… don’t hesitate to call me whenever she wants to talk.”

And Junsu walked her out to where the little girl was waiting with her father. Sporting a fake smile to cover what’s he really feeling inside. He locked himself in his room, slumping on his seat and covering his eyes. His eyes burned, but he didn’t have the time to be sad as the phone rang loudly in front of him.

He picked it up heavily and the reception announced the arrival of Mr. Park Yoochun. Ah, he forgot that he’s supposed to have lunch with him. With a deep sigh he told her that he’s coming out.

He wasn’t in the mood for lunch but maybe Yoochun and his greasy jokes could make him feel better. So he got up from his seat and took jacket before he stepped out of the room. He needs a distraction, and nothing better to distract him but Park Yoochun.

* * * * *

Jaejoong was sipping his coffee, waiting for Junsu to finish his practice at the clinic across the street. Over the years, they have become good friends. It was awkward first when Yoochun told him that they’re finally going out. But as their meetings got more frequent, Jaejoong found that Junsu was a pleasant guy. Not to mention that Moonbin and Min Young were so fond of him as a doctor. So they started to hang out together, Jaejoong with Yunho, Junsu with Yoochun and Changmin by himself. JiHye said that she’d rather be home with her children than hanging out with with a bunch of ‘old men’.

t was still a surprise though, for Junsu to call him and ask to meet just the two of them he rarely did that. There must be something bothering his mind, looking at the look on his face as he entered the coffeeshop.

“Jaejoong, sorry I’m a bit late. Have you been waiting long?” he asked him as he sat down and opened his jacket.

“Not really, I happened to have some free time so left the house earlier. Relax…” he smiled at the man in front of him.

“Oh, where are the children? I think this is the first time that I heard you say you had a free time without any of the munchkins.” He chuckled.

Jaejoong laughed, “You’re right… I never said that, did I?” he laughed some more. “Umma is taking Min Young for shopping and I was forbidden to come along, and Binnie’s on summer camp until Saturday evening. Yunho and I will pick him up at his school.”

“And you survived your another week of Moonbin-less at home, congratulations!” He mocked him.

“Hey! That’s not funny!” he scowled.

Junsu chuckled, “Really Jae… sometimes I wonder how did you make him listen to you. You acted more like the child in many occasions…” he smiled at him gently. “But I guess that’s what makes him loves you… and his father too.”

Jaejoong blushed… it’s funny that he’s still shy whenever Junsu mentioned his relationship with Yunho.

“So, dr. Kim, how are you?” Jaejoong decided to get to the point of their meeting.

Junsu’s face turned grey, and for a few seconds he didn’t say anything. Until…

“Jae… what is it like? To have children?”

He didn’t hide his surprise. “Why did you ask? Did you- oh! Don’t tell me… are you-“

“No no no! Don’t jump into assumptions!” Junsu held up his hands. “It’s not what you think it is! No! I’m not thinking of adopting any children!”

“Then what is it? Why did you suddenly ask me that kind of question? Honestly, even if you are thinking of adopting I won’t be surprised. Children love you… I’m sure that you’ll be a great parent.”

"Noooo, I’m not adopting! Listen to me first, will you.” He sighed.

Jaejoong put down his coffee cup. “I’m listening.”

He took his time before he started to speak. “You remember Choi Soo Jong? The 7 year old with bone cancer who came to see me?” Jaejoong nodded. “She- she only has another two weeks to live… and- I feel useless. I mean, she came to see me not because I can cure her… just becase she told her parents that I made her feel better. But I wish I could do more for her.”

Jaejoong reached out and took his hand. “I’m sorry to hear that Junsu. But I personally think that you’ve done more that anyone else can do. You’ve made her happy, and that’s the most important thing that you can give her now.”

“I know, it’s just- I wish-“ he choked… “She’s only 7 years old! She’s-“ he couldn’t say anything more. Jaejoong understood.

“And what’s that gotta do with asking me how it feels to have children? You actually wanna know how I feel about Min Young? Since she was once told she wouldn’t exceed 4 years in life?” Junsu looked at him sadly and nodded.

Jaejoong could only smile. Junsu is such softhearted person. “You know… whenever I look back and remember what it was like to see her fighting for her life in the hospital, I didn’t want to wish for anything else but that no other parents should feel what we felt back then. Yunho wish that he would die in her place, I prayed every night that Moonbin should be healty all his life and wouldn’t go through the same thing as his sister.”

“But you know what… we were lucky. I’m sorry to hear about Soo Jong. I’ll see what I can do… probably take Min Young to see her within this weekend. But how about you? Did you tell Yoochun how you’re feeling now?”

“I- I don’t know Jae… I don’t think that I could discuss this kind of thing with him. We never…” He spoke softly.

“Why not? You’ve been together for 5 years, for god’s sake! I’m sure he would want to know about how you deal with your work… and not only the rainbow and the butterfly about it!” Jaejoong claimed in surprise. He always thought that Junsu and Yoochun are perfect for each other and that they could read each other’s mind. Junsu had become well known in their circle of friends and even became the celebrities’ pediatrician over Yoochun’s recommendation. So it was indeed a surprise for him to hear what Junsu just said.

The other guy seemed reluctant to reply to him. “It’s just… Yoochun never asked about my work unless I told him. And I think he’s not interested in any other children but Moonbin and Min Young. He… didn’t seem to care about my patients…”

"HE WHAT!” Jaejoongwas shocked. It doesn’t seem like the Park Yoochun that he knew. “Junsu, it’s impossible! He-“ he stopped in mid sentence after seeing Junsu’s dejected look. He took a deep breath before he asked him, “I’m Sorry… I didn’t mean to sound like I know him so well and better than you but… “

He raised his head and looked closer at Junsu, “Is it one of the reason that you guys still live separately? I mean… sorry to mention this but back when we’re together he seemed to be ready to move in and- gosh… I’m sorry, Junsu, I really am. But this is really shocking for me.”

Junsu nodded weakly. “Yeah… no need to be sorry. But that’s how it is. I don’t even know if he’s happy with this relationship. I… I don’t know Jae, I really don’t know where to bring this relationship! He doesn’t seem to care about my job, he never asked me to move in, it doesn’t seem that he’s into this relationship as much as I do!” he sounded desperate.

Jaejoong contemplated for awhile… “Did you ever ask him why?”

Junsu’s eyes widened for a fraction. “Of course not! I don’t want to sound desperate!”

“But you are!” Jaejoong retorted and that shut Junsu up. “Look, it’s not like Yunho and I are always telling each other how our days go… many times I feel neglected when he comes home late and doen’t even ask about how me but the kids… and there are moments when he feels ignored when I don’t ask him how his shooting goes. But that’s all just a misunderstanding… when you’re with someone long enough sometime you expect them to be able to read your mind. But I’m sure Yoochun had a reason of why he acts the way you don’t expect him to. Talk to him… tell him how you feel and find your answer. Don’t let your insecurities and uncertainty destroy what could be the best thing ever happen to you. Trust me, I’ve been through it…” Jaejoong squeezed the other’s hand gently.

Junsu stayed silent for awhile. But when he looked up, he countenance looked more peaceful and confident.

“You’re right. Things are not going to change if I stay silent…”

“That’s the spirit! Come on, be confident of yourself. Make him think that he’s the unluckiest person on earth to ever let you go! Fighting!”

Junsu finally smiled. “Thanks Jae, I really appreciate that you’re coming here.”

“Junsu, I want you to be happy too. So stop that non-sense, you can always talk to me whenever you want to. But first, sort things out with Yoochun. I’m sure he has things that he wants to say to you too.”

Jaejoong sincerely hope that their relationship will work out. Kim Junsu and Park Yoochun deserves each other.

* * * * *

Yoochun can’t wait to seee his lover again tonight. It’s only lunchtime, but he’s been fidgeting on his seat, hard to concentrate on the papers in front of him.

He met Jaejoong last night when the guy was picking Yunho up at their company’s annual party. In the short time that he was around he mentioned something about Yoochun having to talk to Junsu soon. He didn’t tell him why he just said with a smile that he’s lucky to be loved by someone like Junsu. And today happens to be the day when he has arranged a romantic dinner with the pediatrician. More than that… he’s going to propose. Yes, Park Yoochun is going to settle down.
They haven’t even lived together, but 5 years is long enough for him to be sure that he had found the one that he’d been waiting for, the one he wants to spend the rest of his life with… and no other person is more perfect than dr. Kim Junsu. After he broke up with Jaejoong he had a couple of flings but none of the guys really interest him. Until Junsu came along. He’s pleasant and a good listener. He’s also caring and attentive, probably that’s why he became children’s most favorite pediatrician. At least the two Jung children love him much, and they are quite picky when it comes to people.

Truth to be told, he hasn’t contacted him at all for the past week until last night when he asked him to meet him for this dinner. Proposing isn’t something that he decided over night. During the week that they weren’t in touch he actually felt a bit disappointed cause Junsu didn’t call him or sent him any message at all. He was never once to initiate communication nor intimacy, he’s the opposite of Jaejoong. But a week was also a long time to assure himself that what he was feeling was true. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with this man. He prayed that the other party felt the same.

So finally the fateful night arrived. He was so anxious while waiting for his lover that he downed a bottle of water already. He tried to avoid wine or alcohol, he wanted to be sober when he propose. And finally Junsu showed up on their table, though his face didn’t show that he’s eager about this dinner like himself. Well, that should change when it’s over anyway. He stood up to kiss his man, “Hey honey, I missed you so much. How’s your week?”

Junsu didn’t return his kiss. “Hey, I miss you too. It was okay, but you must be totally busy that I didn’t even hear from you at all for a week.”

Yoochun thought that he sounded upset. He didn’t blame him. “I’m sorry, but you could’ve called me too you know.”

Conversation didn’t go as smooth as he hoped it would. So after they finished with their meals he didn’t want to waste anytime to ask him the big question.

"So…”
“So…”

They spoke together. Apparently Junsu also had something to say to him. Being the gentleman that he is, he asked him to speak first.

Junsu looked anxious. “Ah, no… go on, you can speak first.”

“Honey, it doesn’t matter. I wanna hear what you gotta say to me. It must be important.”

“Nnn, not that important. You first.”

Yoochun sighed, was it really hard to propose. “Why don’t we say it together then? After that we will decide who should reply to whom. Deal?”

Junsu took a deep breath. “Deal.”

“Ok… here we go… 1… 2… 3!”

“Will you marry me?”
“Will you move in with me?”

One second later they looked at each other in astonishment. “You’re… asking me to move in with you?” Yoochun asked him in disbelief.

“Are… you’re just proposing?”

Yoochun stared into Junsu’s eyes for a few seconds before he dove and pulled him for a long kiss. The only stopped when they ran out of breath. Yoochun was panting when asked the other man, “Why now?”

“I realized that I was always waiting for you to take action first. Then you didn’t contact me at all for a week… I was so scared that you’re finally realized that you don’t like me anymore and arranged this dinner to break up with me.” Tears started to fall from his eyes. “And I don’t wanna lose you, so I asked you that question in hope that you don’t break up with me even if you wanted to.” He was crying in relief.

Yoochun chuckled. “Idiot. Would I break up that easily with someone that had been by my side for 5 years? But I’m glad that you’re feeling that way. Cause I also don’t want lose you babe… I love you.”

They kissed again, this time more slowly more gentle. Yoochun thanked himself that he chose a private room though it cost a lot. But the man in front of him worth more than that.

He caressed his cheek and wiped his tears away. “Kim Junsu-ssi, I’m asking you once again. Will you marry me?” And he reached into his pocket to take the ring that he had put in there.

Junsu gazed at him affectionately before replied, “There’s no one else in this world that I’d love to say I do but to you.”

This time, Mr. CEO couldn’t hold back the tears that he’d been holding as he put the ring on his lover’s finger and embraced him.

Junsu held him tight. “It’s funny that we were thinking of the same thing at the same time.”

“Yeah… funny…”

“But I guess it’s fate.”

And Yoochun smiled as he remembered their talk about fate that many years ago when they both were just friends and didn’t even know each other so well.

“Yeah… it’s fate. It’s our destiny.”

Yoochun was so right, it was fate that brought them all together. He wouldn’t have met Junsu if not because of Jaejoong. And Jaejoong wouldn’t have had his children if not because he broke up with Yunho first.

Life won’t always be great. Things are not always what it seem. And dreams won’t always come true. But when you face your life with optimism and walk straight with your head up and get over the mountains of trouble… You may find what you’re looking for and it may be better that what you hope for.
