Yunho never really hated his father.
He wasn’t a man of many words, but he could feel that he actually cared about his only son. At least he always asked him how school went whenever they had dinner together as family. He would listen to whatever he was saying and nodded his understanding once in awhile.
Though his parents didn’t communicate much in front of him, he always thought that there was no problem between them, that it’s just the way they acted towards each other. Until he found out about his father’s infidelity. His mother always taught him not to hate his own father. People made mistake, and we should forgive. He was angry, but he couldn’t deny the truth in his mother’s words.
“Yunho-ah, as long as your father chooses to return home, then I could forgive him. He knew that he had made a mistake and he admitted it to me. It’s enough for me if he’s being a good father to you. He had promised me not to lie anymore, and I believe him. I felt sorry for his woman who has to wait on him everyday, not knowing whether he will return or not. Just waiting… and he chose to come back home. She must be very lonely.”
It wasn’t easy for him to forgive him instantly like his mother did, but in the end he did. Eventually they grew distant after his mother’s death. Though his mother told him that she forgave him, he always knew that the affair hurt her more than he would admit… and it affected her originally weak physic.
When his mother died, he lost the bridge in the relationship between him and his father. It’s awkward to grief together and consoling each other, it just didn’t seem right. They had never had a lot of physical connection in the first place, and soon they lived their own life in the same house. Only greeting each other when they met in the hallway; no more dinner together or telling how the day had been.
When Changmin came along, he heard about how the boy and his mother lived from Min Sook-ahjussi. His mother was right after all. The moment his father found out about Changmin’s existence, it was also when his mother found out about his infidelity. He left them out of guilt and never showed up again. He didn’t even come for her funeral, he just sent Min Sook to picked up the boy and brought him home. He never spoke to him, he didn’t even know that the boy being bullied at home by the maids because they blamed him and his mother for the death of his mother.
His respect to his father was decreasing little by little. He had left the boy and his mother in poverty, the least he could do was to at least pay a little attention to him since he decided to bring him home! But no, he began to spend more time at work and less at home. And they started to have more disagreement as years went by.
When his father asked him about his relationship with Jaejoong he didn’t want to lie. He confirmed it with him. The rage that he showed him was unexpected. Why should he be so emotional about it when he never even talked to him? So what if he’s gay? Was there a rule that he can’t be the head of the company if he’s one? He intended to fight for his love but his father’s words hurt him too much that he chose to leave everything behind to start anew with Jaejoong. Leaving the luxury that he had known since birth and leaving his lonely little brother for the sake of love. The last words that he spat at his father’s face when he turned and walked away were still imprinted clearly in his head.
“If you’re so ashamed of me just because I love a man, then I guess there’s no use of me being in this place anymore. You can keep your attitude and your pride, but I refuse to be a part of it. I’m leaving! And don’t look for me.”
He didn’t say anything when he packed his bag and left. He didn’t try to stop him. He didn’t call him out. Just Changmin.
Changmin begged him to stay… told him that he would be lonely if he left, he would listen to whatever he told him. But he was just 18, love was more important than anything else. His father’s back was the last thing he remembered of him as he turned away and left. To be on his own and start a new life with Jaejoong.
Whenever he could he always contacted Changmin through phone. The first year the kid always cried on the phone but gradually sounding more and more mature in the following years. He never asked about his father and Changmin never told him anything either, but he kept following him through the business news. That was until the accident. Since then he was too busy adjusting to live with one hand and taking care of Moonbin. After a few years, he started to feel like he had been living on his own all his life. Changmin was the only reminder of the life that he left behind.
Yunho never really hated his father.
He was just too ashamed to face him in his condition and he wasn’t sure that Moonbin would be accepted. If he could ignore the son that’s his own flesh and blood, there’s no guarantee that he wouldn’t treat Moonbin the same way, if not worse. Especially since the boy was in no way related to the Jung; except for the fact that Yunho raised him.
Now fifteen years after his rebellious decision, here he was… back to the place that he thought he wouldn’t see again until the day he die. Never once he imagined that he would once again walk on the thick Persian carpet of the living room, across the shiny marble of the corridor that would lead him to where his father was lying, breathing through a ventilator as Min Sook had explained to him all over again once he met him at the front porch.
It felt so strange to have everyone bowed down at him and being called ‘young master’ again. He felt out of place, like he didn’t belong. All the while Changmin didn’t speak one word to him, he just walked in front of him in silence. He saw that Min Soon was the only one that treated him normally, the other maids and hordes of servants all over the mansion didn’t even dare to look up at him when they spoke. What have he become in this place? There’s no trace of the playful and easy going little brother that he always showed around him and Moonbin.
He didn’t have time to question himself as they arrived in front of the big Oak door. He would see his father once the door is opened. He’s not sure if he’s ready to see the things that he ran away from for 15 years. Changmin stood before him with his hands on the brass handle.
“Ready to see Appa again, Hyung?” He didn’t turn around to see him when he asked.
“… I’m here, aren’t I?” He replied, his voice hoarse already from trying to hold back his emotion.
His brother nodded as he pushed the door wide opened.
He took four steps into the room following Changmin and he could see a glimpse of his father on his bed amongst the thick cotton duvet… tubes around him and a beeping ventilator next to his bed. The doctor and nurses stood in line on the other side, looking at him expectantly.
He hears his brother’s voice vaguely, “He can’t speak or move… the doctor said that he’s half in a coma… but he can hear you. Go talk to him, I’m sure that he missed you.”
He moved forward and the moment he saw his father’s frail and helpless self all past disagreement forgotten. He’s a son again, coming home to see his parent for the last time. When he reached out and touched his father’s bony hands, he didn’t hear the faint steps of his brother and the other people in the room moving away and closing the door softly; giving them privacy for a final farewell.
Jung Yunho is home, Appa.

It’s already 9pm and Moonbin hadn’t heard from his father at all. Jihye-noona told him that his uncle came and picked him up, so he must be fine. But he always called. Always.
He didn’t feel so lonely since Jihye-noona was staying with him. He told her to go home after dinner but it seemed that he couldn’t hide his anxiety.
“Bin, are you sleepy?” She asked him as she turned down the TV’s volume.
He walked over to the sofa and plopped himself down next to her. He rested his head on the cushion and closed his eyes. “A little. But I want to wait for Appa.” He opened his eyes and looked at her, “Should I just call him?”
Jihye chuckled, “He went with your uncle, I’m sure he’s fine. Don’t worry, I’ll wait here until he comes home.” She pinched his right cheek as he frowned.
“Do you know why Min-ahjussi picked him up? Where did they go? Appa didn’t tell me this morning that he’s going with him. And this is the first time that he’s late without calling home.”
“Hmm… I guess it must be important. Your uncle also didn’t come inside, he just honked from outside and Yunho-oppa told me that he’s picking him up.”
“Noona… You’ll miss the last train home if you’re not going now.” Though his voice sounded concern for her, his body the opposite as he leaned his head on the girl’s shoulder.
“Never mind… I’m not leaving you until your father returns. If he’s not coming until the next hour I’ll just spend the night here. I have no class tomorrow, and I always brought an extra shirt in my backpack. Don’t worry yourself Bin… Just sleep if you wanna sleep and I’m sure Oppa will go to your room as soon as he comes back.”
“Noona, I’ll sleep at Appa’s room, you can have my bed.” He told her as he stood up to prepare himself to bed. She nodded at her. “Uhm, you sure I don’t have to call him?”
Jihye gave out a heartily laugh, “You’re acting like a five year old! He’ll be fine! Besides, your uncle will call if something is wrong, which I doubt that anything will go wrong under your uncle’s control!” She rolled her eyes at him.
“I guess you’re right.”
“Look, I’ll send a message to your Appa OK? I’ll let you know if something is not right, I promise. But let’s pray that everything is fine. Hm? Now go to bed… you slept very late last night, didn’t you?”
Moonbin nodded as he walked to his father’s bedroom. He turned around before he entered it, “Noona, thanks for staying though you don’t have too. I really appreciate it.”
“You’re like a brother to me, Bin, I’m glad to stay.” She smiled. “Goodnight, don’t forget to brush your teeth before bed!”
“I will. G’night.”
Jihye was left alone in the sofa, the sound of the TV was the only thing heard around the house. She reached out for her phone and scrolled down the number. She was about to punch the button for text message when she found Yunho’s mobile number, but out of instinct she scrolled down further until she saw Changmin’s name. Yunho had given her the number before his angioplasty, for emergency purposes. She took a deep breath and typed… hoping that the message would reach him and she could go to sleep knowing that his boss in alright. She didn’t know for Moonbin’s sake of hers… but she wouldn’t be able to sleep without finding out either.

Jaejoong woke up in the morning with curiosity of an interesting headline in the morning paper that Shim Changmin promised him the day before. After talking to him he found out that Yunho had an interesting person for a brother. He wasn’t able to read his mind or see a glimpse of his true intention in their abrupt conspiracy, but to him as long as it would be to his advantage then he didn’t have to understand that man at all. The relationship was purely based on each interest. He only wanted Yunho back.
He went down to the dining room and hid his smirk seeing his mother’s perplexed face in seeing him there at 8 in the morning, dressed up to the nines, smiling elegantly at her as he greeted her good morning. He felt good and he had no intention to hide it from her. She could feel miserable all the day but it ain’t going change his mood.
He sat down on his chair and drank his fresh orange juice. He asked one of the maids to bring him the paper. He spread the front page in front of him with ease. But nothing prepared him for the bold large font printed on the first page. His countenance grew harder as his eyes scanned the news carefully.
“THE FORMER CEO AND FOUNDER OF JUNG INC. PASSED AWAY PEACEFULLY AT HIS HOME AT ONE AM THIS MORNING.”
There was a formal photo of him back when he was still the head of the Firm before Changmin took over. Must be the official release by company. Then the story went on about the history of the firm, the relationship with his in laws, and more of the things that he’s not interested of. Until another sub title struck him before in the middle of the page.
“The long lost sole heir of Jung Inc., Jung Yunho, was also seen inside the Jung mansion since the day before. Is this a sign that he has returned to the household and ready to take over the throne from his half brother, Shim Changmin?”
His hand gripped the side of the newspaper tightly that his knuckles turned white. ‘Shim Changmin knew that his father was dying...’
He didn’t waste anytime as he suddenly stood up and startled the mad who was going to serve him his breakfast. He ignored her and half running to his study under his mother’s stare. He called Yoochun and instructed him to send condolences flower to the mansion. The biggest one with imported white roses for the bouquet. It’s Yunho’s favorite flower since it reminded him of his mother.
He paced back and forth inside until Yoochun came.
“Did you find out when is the funeral?” He knew Yoochun would come prepared.
“Tomorrow noon, at 12, Christian way just like his wife.”
“Isn’t tomorrow too soon? His family won’t give more time for people to pay their last respect to him?”
“From the information that I could gather, Jung-ssi died from illness and it was decided that a funeral soon would be best.”
“I see…” He sat himself on his leather chair. “And… how long had Yunho been there for his father?”
“Apparently he came just yesterday… I guess we both could guess who brought him back.”
“Do you think I should come to the funeral? Would it… be… fine? Won’t it raise any question from the press.”
“I don’t think so. You’re the head of Kim Corp. as well, the only firm that could match Jung Inc. in assets. It will look like another condolence visit out of respect and politeness. I believe you should go.”
He took a deep breath before he answered Yoochun, “I believe I do.” He thought deeper. “Now do you have any idea what’s going to happen? Do you think Yunho will return to take over the firm like the paper wrote?”
“I can’t say anything on this matter. I didn’t know if he’s capable to suddenly take over. He didn’t finish his High School like you and I doubt that he had the capability for it. Unless his father’s will appoints him so. But for the time being, I’m completely in the dark. I dare say that this… incident is pretty much unexpected.”
“But Changmin knew… that man was prepared when he came to fulfill my invitation yesterday.”
“Excuse me. Are you saying that he expected his father to die??” Yoochun asked him sarcastically.
“No… he probably didn’t expect him to die so soon… but he knew it was coming and with Yunho’s return he knew something was going to happen that’s worth the whole first page of the morning paper.”
None of them opened their mouth for the next 15 minutes… each was busy thinking over the possibilities of the future of Jung Inc.
“Chun…” Jaejoong broke the silence. “Let’s wait until we get a clear idea of what’s going to happen with the family. Just continue with Jung Moonbin’s scholarship and enroll him in the orientation 2 months from now.”
“Noted.”
“Have you ordered the flower?”
“Yes. Not easy, it’s not the season for white roses, but I managed to order a grand one though. Geesh, I never knew that flower could cost as much as Junsu’s leather wallet that I bought him for a make-up gift!” He scowled.
Jaejoong chuckled. “At least it’s not your money. Now let’s get to the office, I’ll prepare an official condolences letter from the company to be sent before the funeral.”
They both got up and walked out of the study. There are things to be done, they’re not the grieving party after all.
