Till Death Do Us Part

A man was sitting cross legged in front of a grave with a large tombstone. He was holding a bouquet of white roses and lilies. He smiled as he talked to the grave.

“Hey Dad, hey Daddy… I guess you’re still being lovey dovey in the after world.” He chuckled. “I need to learn from you guys to show my love to my wife. In Young kept complaining that I’m not a romantic husband.” He chuckled. “But at least I’m still better than Uncle Min. Aunt Jihye came crying to me because he had forgotten her birthday again. But don’t worry, they’ll be fine. I’ve bought him a phone and set up a reminder in every important dates. Geez, it’s a miracle that Aunt Jihye wanted him to be husband, I thought he’s going to stay single forever!”

He put the bouquet on the grave. “Here Daddy, your favorite flowers though I’m sure you don’t care anymore since you’re with Dad now.”

He wanted to say some more but then a 5 year old girl came running into him and almost fall to the ground if not for his strong hands holding her. “Whoa, Jiyool, easy baby! I thought Mommy has told you not to run.” He lifted pulled the girl over and put her on his lap.

“Say hi to Grandpa Jae.”

“Hi Grandpa Jae… Jiyool miss you.”

“You don’t say hi to Grandpa Yunho?”

The girl looked up at him in uncertainty, “But I don’t know him, Daddy, I never met him.”

“I’m sure that your Grandpa Jae has told him everything about you and Inhwan. He can see you from heaven you know, and he’ll be sad that you only say hi to Grandpa Jae. Or better yet, why don’t introduce yourself to him.” He winked at his little girl.

“Okay…” she faced the grave again and said, “Hello Grandpa Yun… I don’t know you but Daddy said that Grandpa Jae must’ve told you about me. I like chocolate but Mommy says that it’s not good for my tooth. I like drawing too, and Grandpa Jae taught me how to draw the house and the sun. Do you know about my brother Inhwan too?”

As the girl kept talking to the grave, a woman had stood behind him, holding a sleeping baby in her arms.

“Bin, what’s she doing?”

“Oh, she’s introducing herself to my Dad.” And he felt that her smile was blinding like the sun. “Inhwan’s sleeping?”

“Yeah, he just drank another bottle of milk.”

“Are you tired, wanna sit down here with me?”

She squeezed his shoulder fondly, “I’ll be fine. I’ll wait for you in the car. Take your time, ok dear?”

Moonbin got up and kissed her and his 8 months old baby. “Thank you honey, it won’t be long.”

And his wife called on their little daughter, “Come Jiyool, let Daddy speak to your Grandpas. I can’t hold your brother very long, let’s wait in the car.”

And as they walked away he could still hear her asked her mom, “Mommy, is it true that Grandpa can hear me?”

He laughed and turned to face his parents’ grave again. Jaejoong had lived another 12 years after Yunho’s death. He cried happy tears when he told him that he’s going to marry In Young. They started dating after Jaejoong’s breakdown and Jaejoong loved her like his own. They got married 8 years ago and Jaejoong was the first to hold Jiyool when she was brought into her mother’s room.

After he got out of the hospital they have talked about how they felt, about losing Yunho and how they should deal with the grief and sorrow. And Jaejoong had fulfilled his promise to be a good and strong father for Moonbin. There were times when he would stay in his room by himself, gazing out the window, holding a picture of his husband. But in the end, he always smiled again.

When he got married his Daddy teased Uncle Min endlessly because he was still single. But at the end of the party he set him aside and talked to him to start considering a marriage. It’s always better to have someone by your side when you’re sad then being lonely all your life. Uncle Min cried and told him that he’s afraid to lose someone he loved like Daddy lost Dad. But Daddy told him at least he had the most wonderful years of his life with Dad. Uncle Min finally married Aunt Jihye 3 year ago after 2 years dating. They haven’t had any children but they’re the happiest couple beside him and his wife. No other couple could beat Dad and Daddy’s love story.

Daddy remained single until the day he died. He started to have a heart condition 2 years ago but he kept hanging on. He said he wouldn’t go until Moonbin give him a grandson. He died in his sleep 3 months ago, in Inhwan’s 6th month. He smiled on his bed as he held their family picture. And when Moonbin cried helplessly holding his hands, he saw something that he hadn’t seen since for twelve years. His Dad’s wedding ring.

When Dad died Daddy had taken it off his ring finger and Moonbin never knew where he kept it. Apparently he wore it together with his own that night before he went to bed. They were shining, the two wedding rings on his finger. Moonbin asked him once why they chose to have a platinum wedding ring with no diamonds on it nor any engrave to make them look fancier. He told him that their love was simple, and they didn’t want to fancy them at all, just plain, endless round platinum rings to show their never ending love to each other. They had proven it to their grave. It was his Daddy’s request many years ago to be in the same grave as his Dad.

“Thanks Dad, Daddy… You’ve taught me what true love really is. Help me to be a better husband for In Young and a perfect father for Jiyool and Inhwan just like you both had been to me. I love you.”

As he turned away to walk back to his family he felt a soft breeze on his back. And he swore that he heard his parents laughter in his ear, ‘We love you too, Jung Moonbin.’.

“Yunho! Can you please fix the garage door? I can’t lock it!”
“Yes, honey…”

“Yunho, do you think you can fix the pipe before I call the plumber? They cost a fortune and I’m sure it’s just something stuck in the pipe.”
“Sure, sweetie.”

“Yun, can you please pick Moonbin up after school? You don’t have any extra class to teach, do you? I’m stuck with my clients in a boring meeting here.”
“No problem, babe.”

And as the day turned into nights, they embraced on the bed after showing their love to each other passionately. After making sure that their 10 year old had gone to bed, of course.

“Yun, thank you… you’ve been a great husband. I know I’m annoying, but thanks for not complaining.”

“Anything for you, honey… I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“You better be.”

Silence.

“Yun…”

“Yeah...”

“What would I do without you?”

“…”

“I don’t think I can live without you.”

Another silence. And just when Jaejoong was about to turn around to face his husband he felt his hands on his tummy pulled him closer to his body.

“Hey Jae…”

“Yeah…”

“You’ll be just fine without me. Live on, even when I’m not beside you anymore. Promise me that you’ll be fine.”

“…”

“Promise me. Though I hope you’ll never get to realize the promise though. I’ll try to be around for as long as I can.”

"..."

“Jae…”

“I promise.”

A kiss on his neck.

“Thank you…”

THE END

A/N
I'm sorry for not updating for so long... It's always like this nearing the end of year. Christmas preparation, working harder to finish the jobs before everyone takes a long Christmas break... and worse traffic jam all over town! But here I am... bringing the ending of this special fic.

I want to thanks everyone who had followed this story. I really thought that no one would read it as the warning says 'character death' already. But there are actually some people who read it anyway. It's a special fic for me because I wrote this as a therapy for my own heartbreak after my mom's death. 65% of the fic's contents are my true story. There were some things that I wish I could say to her before she died, there were some words that I wished I could take back when she was sick. But dealing with terminal illness was no joke. I meant it when I said it's a battle for everyone around the patient. But by finishing this fic I have made peace with myself. I've done what I could and I've said what I wanted to say to her on the night before her death. I know she heard me.

Once again, thanks to everyone who read. Remember, life goes on even when our most loved one had gone. So live your life to the fullest and strive to be a better person everyday. Life is too precious to be spent in misery. Fighting!
