Questions on Total Immersion Swimming

Oct 31, 2007 11:14

I can't find a good LJ swimming community, so...

Is anyone here a fan of Total Immersion swimming? Have recently been trying it for the first time.

I own the first four Terry Laughlin products listed here on Amazon.com---three of Terry Laughlin's books and the DVD "Freestyle Made Easy."

In only 3 practices, I went from swimming 26 strokes/length to 15 strokes/length of the 25 yard pool! My stroke efficiency has leaped almost 100 percent!

Here's my latest post on it:

Here are ALL my swimming posts. Includes my Total Immersion entries:

I would appreciate any advice you could give on getting the best TI freestyle form
possible!

My questions:

1. What exactly do I do with my hands underwater, as I move through a stroke?
The books aren't clear. Do I move them straight through (I-curve), in an S-curve, off to the side while keeping my elbows high like a scarecrow, or what?

2. How exactly do I move my entire arms underwater? Where do I hold or move my
elbows during the underwater part of a stroke?

3. How do I move my arms when wearing Fistgloves? What am I supposed to use to "catch" the maximum amount of water?

4. What does "holding the water" feel like? I tried stroking even more slowly
last night, not pushing the water hard.

5. I'm probably moving forward more slowly than when I did my traditional freestyle. How
do I keep efficiency and TI principles while INCREASING speed?

6. I'm supposed to get most of my power from turning my core fast. But I also need to keep my arms moving more slowly. How do I deal with my arms as I increase swimming (and core turning) speed?

7. Do you find the 2-beat kick adequate for races?

8. What do you think of these videos of Grant Hackett's and Gadi's swim technique?
I feel Grant Hackett really looks trained in TI. Agree? He's an Olympic gold medalist in the 1500 m.

9. What's the best way to do great flip turns?

Thank you very much!
