Starting a new fitness routine. I am taking up running. Anyone have any tips on how to get started? Tomorrow I am running for 3 mins and walking for 3 mins.  I have done elliptical for years as my only source of cardio.

You can find good training programs that will take you from beginner to running 10 km over a period of time.

As you're currently planning, they take you from doing short runs / walks of equal time and slowly increase the running time and eventually decrease the walking time until you can do 10 minute runs with 1 minute walks, etc.

Make sure you get yourself fitted for a proper running shoe. I can't think of anything more important before you start running. It might be that you end up with shoes that cost $125, but it's worth it for the prevention of injuries.

I would also look at: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Also make sure you stretch before and after.

I only offer these tips as someone who has suffered through shin splits, stress fractures and ITB issues.

A really good program that I'm familiar with is called "C25K" which stands for "Couch to 5k." What's even cooler is that I think there are Livejournal communities for running programs, and also Facebook pages (definitely for Couch to 5k at least).

5k to 10k: http://www.halhigdon.com/10ktraining/10knovice.htm

good luck!
