HEY STRAIGHT GUYS

Wanna see what I have to fill out in order to qualify to buy same-sex domestic partner insurance benefits at my company?

Hint:  They won't accept our Canadian marriage license.

Item 4, insert after the word "married": "to a person outside of the domestic partnership here declared". Bit of a problem if, because your marriage certificate is not recognised, you have to swear that you *aren't* married.

Not really feeling the outrage. Given the fact of your not being legally hitched in this jurisdiction, it looks like a good-faith effort to describe a marriage-like relationship. The 12 month thing is the only burden a straight couple wouldn't face, and most shack up for that long before formalizing the deal anyway.
How does the Canadian connection work? Are one or both of you Canadians? Is there a difference between a marriage license and the marriage itself? If you were a straight Canadian couple, would that be good enough? Does it help in other situations?
US style health care is a way more frightening idea than US style marriage. My Alberta health care is reasonably cheap, reasonably effective, and stone-simple. I quit and re-hire almost every year; having it (maybe) supplied by my employer would be a nightmare!
