Considering how much I paid for Final Cut Pro, and considering how well it actually works*, there is no fucking way I'm paying Apple for a completely new Final Cut Pro X-- which you can't upgrade to, you have to buy it completely new ( Read more... )

I don't like the direction Apple is going anymore. They've seen the utter cash cow that is being in the mobile device industry, and have let their Mac business fall by the wayside.

Look at Lion; its new features are pathetic toys, and they don't even do something as basic as provide install media; you have to install through a stupid "app store".

It's sad too, because I do like their mobile products too; the problem is they're letting the Macintosh platform stagnate while concentrating most of the attention on the cash cow.

And worse, Microsoft doesn't seem much better; they're also jumping on the "mobile is king" bandwagon. Look at Windows 8; it's a joke.

Anyway, sorry to rant, but I can see what you're talking about and where things are going and I don't like it.

I was joking with coworkers, just the other day, that Lion would be the last OS X, that they'll discontinue it and ALL their devices will be running iOS.

There's a major revolt going on as far as FCP goes, professional users are mostly livid. They basically took a professional-grade NLE that easily gave AVID a run for its money and turned it into hobbyist software. The folks I'm still in touch with in the industry have mostly said exactly what you have-- there's no way they're going to upgrade to something that has fewer features, is dumbed-down, and even lacks backward compatibility with previous versions of FCP.

I guess FCP has been going downhill since 4.5 though. That was the last version I had that I used heavily, and I loved it. I'm a bit surprised you'd have trouble installing & using it, it's not like Apple has a broad range of hardware and OS versions to support.

Thus do we finally see the problems I was worried about WRT Apple back in the day. When you rely exclusively on one vendor for hardware, software, compatibility checks and such, when they snooze on the job you are indeed Mightily Fucked. The Cultists are supporting a tottering empire, unfortunately. Let's hope it doesn't fall down too hard when it does.

It seems like professionals that have relied on FCP are finally getting the message. Apple is now Consumer Products only... DUH. You're not making a video for YouTube? DON'T CARE NO MO.
