I just saw "Sweeny Todd"

And though I'm aware I may be the only person in the world who feels this way, I must admit I didn't like it much.

Spoilery review-type thingy ahead! )

...and I appreciate the candid review, cuz I was on tour in San Francisco in 1981, and I was lucky enough to see it there on stage (with Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett!). I frankly don't expect the film to match my memory of the play -- even 26 years gone -- but I was hoping for better than you describe. Still, I'll be checking it out, no doubt, and "forewarned..." and all that, so I thank you.

If you want to compare, the Angela Lansbury/George Hearn production was taped for TV the year after I saw it; there are a lot of good bits on YouTube (including "A Little Priest"!).

I'm planning to try to get ahold of a staged version, because I actually really liked the story. I was just less than thrilled with Burton's execution.

Also, do keep in mind I'm very much the minority opinion. The film got 87% positive reviews on Rottentomatoes, and everyone I've spoken to who's seen it has loved it. Chances are good you will too. I just wanted to put it up as a way to explain to myself why I had such problems with it.

And even I am coming around. I'm probably going to see it again to make sure I wasn't just feeling overly critical last night. ;)

I haven't seen it yet, but I heard the soundtrack and thought it was... OK. That's it. I think because I've seen the Angela Lansbury stage version so many times, that's the music that's in my head.

I appreciate your comments on the movie, as I haven't seen it yet and don't want to go in with expectations too high. :-)
