I'm hesitant to use the word attractive regarding McCain... have you seen the guy? :D

It's not that I love him to pieces or anything, it's just that he seems to be way closer to my current ideals than either Democrat (I'm intentionally omitting Gravel on the basis of the entire country not knowing who the fuck he is).

I agree with what you said about career path, ownership issues, and military experience being influences. If forced to choose Dem v. Repub, my answer surely would not have been Republican (gosh, even now I'm still repulsed) until very recently when I analyzed the candidates' individual views. I still believe strongly in the views of the party I registered for, but they hadn't had a running candidate since 2000 and they are officially defunct (national HQ shut down April 30, 2004... it's tough to preach peace when our country is at war). Amber = Independent voter, but registered Democrat. And there are no Independent candidates that I am willing to cast a vote for this time around. I'm still very perplexed as to why Nader would jump into the race so late in the game.

I'm no longer convinced that the US can "accomplish the job" in Iraq. It was a misguided plan to begin with. The goals/deadlines/benchmarks are flying by and hey, we're still there. Sure, it's irresponsible to completely withdraw and leave a brand-spankin new government and task force without back-up. But there's also a good chance that we wont make any major headway in the next 5 years. We're dealing with eons of cultural differences. There's very negative history between our two nations, and if I was Iraqi I wouldnt trust the americans either. Our version of democracy may not be what's right for Iraq.

Agreed! Our version of democracy may NOT be what's right for Iraq. It's like making Nebraska communist while the rest of the country maintains its democracy. It wasn't the best idea, but for some reason MANY Iraqis are grateful. I prefer the stories Rod has told me of children barefoot in the fields waving up to our soldiers and smiling as they flew in FAR more than the stories of how the adults would strap their kids with explosives and send them off to ask the nice American soldiers for candy.
