I am feeling really bummed right now. As if I didn't have enough crap to deal with today, I bricked my brand new ipod nano by updating the firmware ( Read more... )

I had one of my friends was trying to talk me into trying some open source firmware, http://www.rockbox.org/, on my mp3 player the other day.

But hey it already does EVERYTHING I want it to and does it well enough so I ain't chancing it!

Well, I have been told that I just have the touch of death, so maybe you'd have more luck, I don't know.

Seriously, the sysadmin in my office tells me that I can find a way to break any sort of software :(

Firmware updates can be annoying, especially when they're poorly documented. Just the other night I upgraded the firmware on my NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra and realized after the fact that there is no driver for the Zen Xtra that allows for firmware above 2.00 from Creative. Turns out the driver is supposedly included in Windows Media Player 10. So I go to install Windows Media Player 11 and am greeted with Microsoft's Legalese saying I don't have a legal copy of XP (even though this IS a legal copy, just I've reactivated it so often that they won't let me activate it anymore) so in the process of getting WMP 11 installed, I take some shortcuts and end up circumventing the driver installation, ending up with some pretty weird driver errors when trying to install the device. Regardless, I figured this out and got WMP11 installed correctly. Woo!

I should think there are ways to unbrick the nanos though, right? I mean there are methods for the iPhone now, so there should be.

*hugs*

In ancient times, you'd have to call out "Unclean! Unclean!" whenever you went out in public.

...oh no, wait, that was Leprosy. Sorry, different touch of death ;)
