omg i read this the other day and i felt like...ok i want to fight this but it's kind of true in some ways...and i was like " i guess i'm holding on to the myth of the superwoman" bc it's better than thinking of myself as weak and helpless...brought me back to my adolescent girls and delinquency class....the thing i didn't like about it is that it was really bareboned it was like..."latinas are fucked...lets not really explain why...we'll jsut pose the VERY erroneous 'culture of poverty' thesis and leave it at that..." not sure what my point here really is but...those are my 2 cents
we need more minority women in the field of sociology, because our people are getting slammed all over the media. i'm all for rebuilding socio-economic infrastructure, but yeesh, publications like this aren't really fair. YES we KNOW what our dirt is, YES, let's work on it, but why aren't we concentrating on the GOOD shit that latinas do as well? i don't hear a damn thing about our latina doctors and lawyers and engineers and professors put into the NY Times... or maybe i just live under a rock, but i think it's about time that we celebrate our successes too.
i agree i was talking to carminia INSTEAD of working...about my plans and how ppl hate on ppl who wanna do non-profit and generally give a damn...and i was telling her about how my non-profit focus will be in getting more people of color into academia bc we need to start creating knowledge bc it's the only lasting thing in this world..bc i swear if i read another book or article about dominicans ans transnationalism i'm seriously going to roll up into these assholes offices and be like...LOOK at ME ASSHOLE...i'm not transnational i'm second generation...we do exist...we're here and we're not leaving...that is all...love you
