I think it's because it dismisses the intrinsic importance of the job. I don't work for intellectual stimulation - that's a pleasant side-effect. I work to earn money and support my family, and because I am good at my job and it is useful and makes the lives of others better. No-one suggests my husband is working for intellectual stimulation.
It's as if whatever one does as a mother isn't very important or a real contribution to the family.
