I thought I was the only person who read Grossman for fun. And, while I'm a translator (poetry, not spoken), I'm in complete agreement with what you're saying. Translators do need more positive attention paid to their work, but it's obviously a version of the work, not an entirely new novel to lay authorship to.
I don't have much more to add, except to remark that your job is awesome and important and, as someone with no facility with languages, I am a little jealous. ;-)
Hahahahah ohhhh. If only it paid for, you know, living! And don't give up on the languages just yet; it often just takes loads of practice. Which, let's face it, isn't the easiest thing to come by if you don't live somewhere people speak the language.
Out of interest, have you read Mike Carey's book series, starting with 'The Devil You Know', which are about a character really not too far from Constantine? How did you feel they compared if so?
I've read the first two of that series, yeah. (Book 1 and Book 2.) In summary, I wanted to like them but didn't particularly care from them: I found them overlong and not nearly as energetic as they needed to be, maybe because poor Felix is actually rather far from Constantine, in every way that counts-at least for me. It sucks, because awesome supernatural adventures are something I'm always looking for.
Sadly there can only be so many awesome supernatural adventures out there. Hmm, I've only actually read a few issues of Hellblazer, though it's on the list.
By the way if you have ever been tempted to try 'Fallen Angel' by Kim Wilkins, I would definitely not recommend it: she seems only to be able to write female characters decently, and the angel in question is intended more as a moral plot device than a character, to be charitable. (I hated reading it, actually, partly because I couldn't actually muster enough disinterest to abandon it partway so ended up reading the whole thing.)
