Booklog Will Save Your Life

I swear someone is standing outside my window with a hose, because there is no way it can or should be raining this much in Los Angeles.

I'm a huge fan of The Thief books, and I'd recommend giving the second a try; I think it might be my favorite in the series (it's definitely close), and I think it's helped by not being in first-person. That being said, as a series, I think its strengths lie more in political intrigue than characters, so I'm not sure the problem of connecting with characters will improve in later books.

Oh, God. As much as it pains me to say this, if you've finished The Thief and you're not head over heels in love with Gen, I'd say don't bother continuing. I read that book until it fell apart, and when the sequel was published, years later, I actually hated it at first, because of some character related issues. And eventually I loved it as well, and I loved the third and fourth immediately. But they're all about the characters to me ( ... )

And now I want to say something that doesn't sound like a crazed defense of a fictional character, because I realized that I enjoy your booklog and use it consistently as a way to find new books to read, and hardly ever comment to thank you.

So thanks! I love reading this. And I have the Larsson books waiting for me under the Christmas tree, because I tend to ignore best sellers, due to a perverse feeling that whatever the masses like is probably crap (I have been proven wrong on this on so many occasions that I should really get over it. Still, it's hard to kick the habit). But I think I've enjoyed, if not loved, every book I've read because of the book log, so Larsson will get his chance over the Christmas holidays, and I'm looking forward to it.

I think it's worth reading the second book, if for no other reason than to see how much she changes the series between the first and the second. (It's rare to see a writer take risks like this. It's rare to see them work this well. And, just, wow. I don't think I've ever seen a sequel that was so un-sequelly while still being great.)

Hmm, like you I thought The Thief wasn't that interesting, and only read it because everyone said the second one was so amazing. And then I read the second one.
And, WOW I did not expect [major plot point] and I really just could not get my head around the [other thing that happened after that].
So, I didn't read any further, because I was kind of squicked out, to be honest.
