Many of you know my new job came with a commute that varies from 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the time of day. I am currently driving a Ford Explorer - a somewhat older one (1996), but it drives great and has actually been the best money hubby and I have ever spent on a vehicle. We haven't spent a dime on it for anything other than routine ( Read more... )

I love my Toyota Rav4. It's like a small SUV. I have 90,000+ miles on mine and haven't had a minute's trouble with it. AND it gets great gas mileage. Good luck!

I used to seriously want a Rav4 back when they first came out! Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to be sure to check them out.

What about one of the hybrids that sits up high. Like the equinox? My dad loves his and the back is very roOmy. And has a bit of storage as well which you will probably lose with a smaller SUV

I've thought about hybrids, which certainly makes sense if the objective is fuel mileage, but I'm a bit concerned that it's too modern for our local mechanics to be able to work on it if it ever needs anything. When hubby bought his truck, he got the factory-installed remote start, and it came programmed for a gas engine, but needed to be set for diesel (because of the delay they need). It was a nightmare to get the local dealership to figure out how to correct it. But that said, I certainly won't rule them out without doing a proper bit of research.

Hit post before I finished ... I was going to thank you for the suggestion and ask if you know what sort of mileage your Dan gets, or range on the electric.

Those are cute! Looks very similar to what my sister drives, but hers is not a KIA (can't recall what it is at the moment). Thanks for the suggestion!

I am trying to convince my mom to buy a Scion xB (the larger SUV-like boxy one) to replace her explorer. I love my xD to pieces (more of a boxy car). I will say the newer xB's get about great mileage, and I drive enough to know that it's a damn good car.
