first off, what are you using it for? portable recording studio with real time editing? forget it unless you've got a couple grand to throw about.
home compy replacement for webby's and asst. fun? more than doable.

lappies are always more pricy than they're desktop brethern. the trick is to figure out how small you want the thing to get. Go you need a 20" inch screen or can you make do with a 12". once you get that, you can seriously narrow your choices.
avoid the newest models of anything, especially the duo cores. the heat exchange is still buggy and you're nuts may roast for that.

get the soundblaster extigy for sound, the dell 19" for external monitor.

As far as hard drives go, try and get a lappy with firewire and a ext.hd with those capabilities. usb will slow you down enough that you'll notice and be cranky.

use linux.

After looking into my options, I'll most likely end up building a desktop instead of getting a laptop, due to the price and ability to get more power out of a desktop. I was likely going to use the thing for my normal intar-webbing, as well as running ArcGIS and eventually some sort of audio-recording jam.

Does stuff like Hyper Transport speed and SATA transfer speed have to match up exactly between the motherboard and the respective things connected to it, or can they vary?
