Capitalism is the only structure, so far, that allows for an expression of Darwinian urges in a productive vector. socialism and communism require far too much unenforceable altruism and self-sacrifice for a species perceives it's own individuality. Hive like creatures could do it which is why ants can create cities that beggar the most ambitious human efforts and army ants can decimate a forest faster and more thoroughly than napalm

Technological breakthroughs are directly tied to economic health. Without a robust economy, robotics and artificial intelligence research will grind to a halt in favor of food/shelter/air/etc.

So, one of the worst case scenarios isn't that we are wiped out by the super intelligent machines, but that our species slowly starves to death on a planet where entire continents are carpeted with the hives of army ants.
