Um, I agree with you completely about the ferret bouncing scene and all your thoughts about it. That is my favourite Draco scene as well. :)

I thought it was an interesting insight into Draco's mentality- family before self, possibly?

Nice thinking. :)

But maybe Draco isn't really as secure in his family as he makes everyone think. Maybe he was worried that he actually is the reason his mother looks like she has something smelly under her nose ( ... )

That's always how I've read the scene. I feel it makes a good parallel to the Quidditch fight in the next book where Draco accuses Harry of sniffing around the Weasleys after the scent of a mother and Harry explodes.

Very true. So interesting that Draco sometimes mirrors Harry (the want to avenge their parents, the insecurity about their place in the 'family'), and sometimes Snape. I guess this is why Harry 'benchmarks' himself against Draco in his head, subconsciously he must've sensed their similarities. I especially like in POA after it was revealed that Sirius 'betrayed' the Potters, Harry felt that Ron and Hermione did not understand at all, and he *quoted* Draco to express how he felt!

Hey! Good to have ya speak up :)

but it's Draco bragging about his family and protecting the family name/reputation/honour because he is actually insecure about it

Oh I certainly agree. I mean it ties well with how he bragged about "bullying" his parents into doing things in his first meeting with Harry. Though the fact that he could get so worked up because of this insecurity, also shows how much he values his parents' opinions of/affections for him- and that was what I meant by 'family before self', sort of :)
