In this chapter, the Investigation Team, shrunk to four and five years old, are subject to Chie's choice of game on the playground.
Not everyone is happy.
Yosuke is made fun of often.
NOW WITH 100% MORE RISE, thanks to Ash reminding me XD;;
"Okay!" Chie grinned widely, a few inches under four feet tall, with one tooth missing in a dirty pair of green overall shorts and a rainbow-striped tee-shirt. "We're gonna play knights and dragons today!"
She looked at the friends gathered with her at the playground--Yukiko in her spotless red dress, Souji with a blank expression as always, Naoto wearing her over-sized blue cap she refused to part with, Kanji with a bandaged nose from a fight not hours earlier, Rise--in makeup already (oh how fast kids grew up these days), Teddie showing his radiating smile as always, and Yosuke--ready to argue as always.
"But you picked the game yesterday! I want a turn!"
"Be quiet, Yosuke-kun. No one wants to play your games, anyway." Chie continued, "Me and Souji-kun and Naoto-kun and Rise-chan and Yukiko will be knights. Yosuke-kun and Kanji-kun will be dragons!"
"Chieeeee," Yukiko complained. "I always get dirty when I play a knight!"
"Then you can be a dragon!"
"But I get dirty being a dragon, too!"
Chie pondered for a moment, tongue sticking out of her mouth in concentration. After waiting for a little bit, an idea obviously struck her "Then you can be the princess in the tower!" She pointed to the top platform of the playground equipment. "I was gonna have Teddie-kun be the princess, but I guess he can be a dragon!"
"Yay!" Teddie cried, arms thrown in the air. "... Kanji-kun, what do dragons do?"
"Uh, well..." Kanji thought, "I guess we beat stuff up and guard the princess and set stuff on fire... and stuff..."
"Oh. Yay!"
"But... Chie-chan, if I'm a knight, then I can't do any totally super awesome things like actresses on TV! Can I do something like that?"
"Uh... if you want, you can tell the story! About how all the knights came in and saved the princess!"
"Do I get to be on stage?"
"You can stand on the slide!"
"Whoo! Okay!"
But Yosuke still pouted. "I don't want to be a dragon, Chie! You always make me a bad guy! When we were cops and robbers, I was a robber! And when we played Featherman, I was a slime monster! And every time I'm a bad guy, you beat me up!"
"But you're supposed to beat bad guys up, Yosuke-kun. Sheesh, that's why you can't be a good guy! You don't know how it works!" Chie's hands rested on her hips, rolling her eyes, exasperated.
"But--c'mon, Partner!" Yosuke turned to Souji. "You gotta help me."
Souji, who had acquired a topcicle from a nearby truck while the others had argued, shrugged. Chie picked the game and made him a knight. And he wasn't giving up his status as a knight to trade with Yosuke, best friends or not.
"Chie-chan, do knights have guns? I wanna be a cool-headed detective knight! The kind that bursts inot he room after slaying the dragon and says something cool before arresting the suspects!" Naoto posed, her fingers in the shape of a gun, pointed at Kanji.
"H-hey! Don't point that at me!" Kanji stumbled backward.
"Don't worry, Kanji-kun." Naoto blew imaginary smoke off her finger gun. "It's not real. Daddy told me never to point real guns at people!"
Chie blinked, about to argue that knights didn't have guns and had to rely on their bodies and reflexes and swords and stuff like the heroes in kung-fu movies, but if the game didn't start soon, their parents would be calling them to go home before they saved the princess.
"I... guess so?" Chie shrugged. "But anyway, everybody to their positions! Ready...!"
The group cleared away, all but for Yosuke.
"But Chie, I don't--"
"Set!"
"--wanna be a--"
"GO!"
"--dra--"
Before he could finish the thought, Chie was already flying at him, with a clumsy, five-year-old's rendition of a high-kick.
And that's how Yosuke lost his two front teeth.
