Someone out there had gotten mixed up when it came to assigning amusing situations, because the person sleeping on the bench next to him was supposed to be a cute girl and not the arrogant ass that was Shinji. The setup sort of made sense - Soma's worldhop ride home was late, and Shinji wanted to stay out here because Fuyuki could get dangerous at night. Soma doubted that Shinji could offer any protection at all, but apparently it made him feel more capable if he pretended that he could, so he didn't argue.
Time continued to stretch on. After Soma tried contacting his ride via his cell phone, he made small talk with Shinji, but his host's answers grew less and less engaged. When Shinji didn't answer for a long period, Soma glanced over to find Shinji asleep.
It wasn't like he looked sweet when he was sleeping, but he did look... softer. He wasn't trying to impress anyone or defend his pride, he was just there, open and completely normal. Soma watched him for a second, before remembering that that was kind of weird and returning to looking for the person who was supposed to pick him up.
A bit later, a whimpering noise caught his attention. Turning back, Soma noticed that Shinji was shivering in the cold night air. He would've been embarrassed to know he was making that kind of sound if he had been awake for it.
...This was so cliché.
Still, Soma couldn't in good conscience let him continue like that. Sighing, he pulled off his coat and draped it over his friend.
It wasn't long after that until his ride finally showed up hours late. He glanced back at Shinji once before leaving.
A few hours later, Shinji stretched out his arms and brushed something fluffy. Blearily, he opened his eyes to discover that Soma had left his coat to cover him while he slept.
He'd call Soma to arrange to give it back.
In a little while.
