This overtime shit is for the birds.  I'm salaried, so I don't even get paid for it.  If I weren't finally learning something useful, I'd be pissed ( Read more... )

I'm quite amused by this "boycott." One of my communities has decided to have an entry hit 5000 comments just to piss people off. :)

Aye.

I get paid for overtime, but the simple fact is that you can only work for so many hours every week for months on end before it has a psychological impact.

And usually not a good one.

Yeah, I definitely agree with that. I've been there before, and the only reason I agree to do anything like I've been doing lately is that I haven't been in crisis mode on a daily basis for a while. Otherwise I'd be hitting my contacts for a new job.

If you're gonna "boycott" or strike or whatever, do it for something that actually makes a difference.

Thank you! This boycott thing is honestly stupid. Its not like they're forcing paid accounts, just Plus accounts. Hell, I have a plus account and *gasp* Ad-Blocker! I don't see the adds, and I get all the benefits.

LJ is a company after all. They have to make money somehow. How many people do you figure have free accounts? A lot of them. A few ad banners aren't going to kill anyone.

Yeah, I think the silliness here is that A) they aren't converting older, free accounts over to the new format, B) this is how damn near every other service on the internet with a pay option works and has for years.

Slacktivism like that works on, say, Facebook, but that's because it's much more volatile than a long lived blogging network. People are willing to change social networks faster than their underwear (remember Friendster?) so when 10,000 people click onto some group related to terms of service changes, the site will respond.

The thing I find most funny about all if it is LJ pays for bandwidth, so in essence the "strikers" are doing them a favor by not posting.

I'm with you on the boycott thing. God forbid a company actually, you know, makes money.

Yeah, especially when they aren't doing anything "evil" to do so. Overall, LJ is on the better side of internet companies.

Now, if they started forcing all the old accounts to be ad based ones, and actively removed posts about ad blockers, then I could justify a mass revolt from the site. Otherwise, it's all drama whores.
