Spoilers abound, GOING NUTS

Sep 02, 2011 10:02

So thanks to clairiere we now have a pretty detailed recap of the first episode.  I'm impressed she can hold off reading it, I cannot.  Anyone interested in reading, http://www.itv.com/presscentre/downtonabbey/s2ep01week38/default.html.

As for my own thoughts here they are under the cut:

SO EXCITED.

Interesting about Bate/Vera/Anna and the Mary scandal... I wonder, though, if Bates doesn't know that Anna knows.. I mean, she wouldn't have told him, probably, right? It's not her secret.

Interested by Branson's reaction to the feathers...

VERY interesting about William/Molesley/Clarkson... Ooooh...

Most of the M/M stuff wasn't new, but I love that Carson is going to be cool with Matthew.. Hee! I had also assmued the eye-snogging was mutual, but... OMG Matthew. DS is AMAZING, we'll know... I hope... Otherwise, ANGSTFEST.

Actually, what GENUINELY intrigues me the most about this, and what I'm REALLY looking forward to, is the Matthew/Thomas scene. I just.. think that's going to be amazing. I also reckon that's where Matthew's Heinrich Schliemann line will be... And oooooohh I'd wondered if Thomas would do that... EEE TRENCH SCENES I CANNOT WAIT.

I'm sure it's going to be the secret EVERYONE knows but not realizing EVERYONE knows it. That may get on my nerves after awhile.

I figured about Carson especially when he saw how devastated when Matthew walked away, not to mention that he knows THE SECRET as well. I'm crossing my fingers the recapper simply isn't that into M/M and isn't willing to read between the lines or maybe even just taking it from a general standpoint. If Matthew doesn't overtly make it clear about Mary, then we really don't know.

I can't wait for the trench scenes either. They talked about Matthew carrying a man across no man's land. Could that be Thomas?

Yeah, the recap can't have covered every single little thing in each scene, it sweeps through the main points briefly, so there's room for that. Hopefully!

I think Dan Steven;s talked about them finding the smallest male extra ever for him to carry (gah, Dan, so adorable!), and I'm *sure* in some random behind the scenes footage from one of those Australian videos I saw Thomas in the background in the kitchen looking okay, which was why I decided against my theory he might intentionally get hurt. But if it's just his hand then that explains it. Well, I say *just* his hand... ouch.

DITTO, re: Matthew/Thomas, that sounds so good, they've never really had a scene together. And now I've just realised the random guy next to Matthew in a promo shot from that scene is probably Thomas. Apparently I can't recognise him with a hat on! Dan Stevens was saying it's an interesting scene because Matthew no longer sees the class barrier anymore, I like the sound of that.

Is the Heinrich Schliemann the line he says in the teeny teaser trailer? I hadn't realised that was a quote!

I could, I get nervous about posting there. Since we've already started here I guess I could just send them a link to this blog entry.

I'm so excited about the new season! I'm mainly invested in Sybil/Branson, so I can't wait to see how their storyline plays out. I think it's interesting how the synopsis says that "Sybil is not entirely surprised" when Branson declares himself...but her lack of surprise does not mean her lack of interest either, does it?

As for Branson blowing off the white feather, I think that seems in character. He seems like a man who is very self-possessed and knows what he wants and believes, and as an Irish Republican, it makes sense that he wouldn't read it as a sign that someone is seeing him as a coward, because it's not cowardice that keeps him out of the war--it's his political leanings.

And ah, poor William. He just can't cut a break, can he? And with Thomas potentially returning to Downton, Daisy's head is probably going to get turned all over again.

I can get behind Sybil/Branson I think, but I want to see a true evolution here. At the end of S1, it was so one sided. I feel Sybil only looked at Branson with friendship in mind. With two years have passing, it's quite possible her feelings would have matured into love but I feel rather cheated if we come back and she's already in love with him ( ... )

-Ethel might find out from Daisy, possibly realizing how Pamuk really died (or where he really died). What I'm curious about is will Vera be the one to inform Richard (who may use that secret to hurt the Crawley family if he doesn't get what he wants from Mary). I must say I always expected Richard, being a newspaper baron, to have some sources and to figure the secret out on his own. I'm going to be really irritated if he hears it from the valet's estranged wife. I didn't expect to like him but I did expect him to have better powers than that ( ... )

[QUOTE: Branson declaring himself to Sybil can be premature since almost all the men on this show seem to get ahead of themselves with the women. Mary had only just realized she was in love with Matthew when they kissed and then he goes and proposes. Same for William and Daisy, and in this case she was only using the kiss to console poor William and he jumped the gun. Maybe the've been friends but with Sybil talking about nursing and war and all, Branson misconstrues what she says. I'm sure they are a couple, but whether Sybil has romantic feelings for him at this time we won't really know ( ... )

Personally, I feel Sybil has life to experience before getting paired off with Branson--or any man! She's only 20 in 1916, and during her first two years of adulthood, she's only lived with the carnage of WWI, as opposed to the leisurely, elegant high society lifestyle Edith and Mary experienced after their debuts. I'm sure her hesitance to respond to Branson stems from her knowledge that life isn't the simple, playful time she had before the war--life has consequences, and running off to marry the family chauffeur no longer appears romantic or rosy.

As for Edith and Mary, I'm eager to see Edith thrive and flourish in her new role (Women's Land Army I believe), and to see how Mary and Sir Richard interact with one another. I'm most interested to see how Robert deals with his irrelevance in wartime society. I found him much too smug and paternalistic in his lot in life, so I wonder if he will keep his cool this season.

I agree about Sybil. While she's the one daughter who seems to be willing to make a full fledged stand on issues she believes in, her wide-eyed, Pollyanna attempts to better the world is going to need to do some growing up. And I expect that to have changed with the war in play.

I'd like to see Edith have something to do rather than sit around and whine. I don't want to dislike her character, I want to like her but it makes it difficult. As for Mary with Richard, I'm ready to be over him. I didn't wait months for her to get back with Matthew simply to fall for another man.

I'm not sure I agree Robert. For an earl, I think he's better grounded than typical patriarchs portrayed for the times. He's a good hearted man who, in spite of growing in an elitist society, seems to care very much for those below his station.
