I don't think I've been a shipper like this ever so I am sad my first one is turning out like this :(. I don't want Mary and Matthew to turn into Cathy and Heathcliff. Also because I don't think Matthew can pull a Heathcliff. excuse my bitterness. i am just devastated Fellowes seems to have gone too far.
Just had to reiterate -- Cathy didn't have to marry Heathcliff to get her father's estate. I seriously believe with how M/M has been so entwined with family (and money), it's impossible for them to end any other way but together (seriously...Matthew's gonna marry some random chick? I don't think so...)
This devotion to him must be something else, it can't be love. And even if it were, he's in no condition to return it.
Yeah, I think he thinks that line about "I don't have to marry him" is pity. I'm actually not entirely convinced he knows how miserable Mary is with Carlisle -- she's been putting on a pretty good front.
Well, you can read my theories on how I think the dog is an engagement ring (in fic and post form. ;p )
What gets me about that scene, almost as much as the desperate grab of the dog, is the completely calm almost unconscious placing of it in his pocket (I know I sound insane when I say this, but it's like he's putting a ring back on). You can picture him doing that practically every day when he was at the front, IDK...
My sister said something that I really liked about the dog. She said if one believes Matthew thinks Mary never loved him back in 1914, the dog is a symbol that Mary cares about him in any way at all. :( And that has to be important, because (though he doesn't know and can't admit it) he still

Awww, that just makes me so sad. I do think it likely that Matthew believes Mary's feelings for him were superficial. He was always believing she could never love the likes of him, and when she admitted to caring for him and they kissed, her jumped on board so fast he went too fast. He probably thinks the reason she prolonged answering may have to do with her family's wishes.

Oh, I don't think he went too fast! Remember they couldn't "date" in those days. You didn't kiss a girl and NOT propose to her, right? (Pamuk was shown to be kind of slimy in that respect, I always thought) And they didn't just kiss, they made out. Once he kissed her (because he kissed her -- my multiple slo-mo watchings of ep 6 have shown his head clearly moves while hers is still :p ) he sort of had to propose to her.
But he didn't know she was harboring a horrible secret, of course... :(

I think they didn't have to propose back then. I think what makes it seem fast is Mary only has just realized her love for Matthew. She's trying to catch up but just as she does, Matthew's ahead of her now to ask for marriage
