Credentials and non-children are quite common at cons. I've attended cons for topics as mundane as software development, and they had restricted attendance to majors (that is, above 18 years) with no children allow -- period. (No day care, either.) Some cons are a bit more lenient, but all have required badges for all attendees. Sci-fi cons tend to be the exception, allowing babes in arms and children.

I suspect that this is more of an insurance/venue requirement and not a political statement. (Really, which political party is going to take a stand against motherhood?)
