Today smiorgan gave me and the bike a lift to work, and after work I went on what was probably my longest bike ride ever: from my office to our other site 5 miles away, and then after a meeting (about dissertation number one, for which a shape and structure is now developing), the 2.5 miles home. Well done! Personally I've found cycling to / from work to be a real stress buster as well as something of a time saver since I lose the ten minute walk from the tram stop to the office.

Have to say though, I don't envy you the English standard of cycle lanes.

It'll triple the length of my commute, so not much of a time save for me! That's why I'm never likely to switch to cycling as my main method, but I think once a week might be fun. If the weather's nice ;-)

And the A road cycle lane is actually pretty good, as is the ring road one that will be the other half of my home-office journey. It's the inner-city ones that are awful.

I grew to rather like the run out along the main road in the direction of where your other site is, when I was doing it regularly at one time. You can get quite a good whizz on down the straighter bits of the cycle track, and there didn't very often seem to be other people using it. You soon get used to ignoring the cars zooming by.

The other bit sounds sh!te though :-(

The far away site is the one I work on, so my commute when I do it will be the nice bit and not the nasty bit, I'm happy to say!

The round trip will be 15 miles, which is quite a scary number! Don't think I could do it all in one go!

Honestly, what silly questions you ask ;-) I'm considering getting those sparkly streamer things that hang from the handlebars as well, but I think smiorgan might disown me...
