Probably my first introduction to New York:

My trip was so full, and yet I didn't get to see 1% of what I want to see in NYC. NYC feels like an analogie of life - there is just so much more than you can even imagine and yet we miss most of it just trying to get from place to place ( Read more... )

I love NYC! I'll be headed there again in April. I have to admit, I've never had to navigate alone, though. But I like to think I'd be brave enough to try!

Um ... your first encounter with NYC was a group of gay sailors?

Ok, actual sexual proclivities aside, they do bounce and float around, arms out and elbows at their sides, quite a bit more than guys would be comfortable doing today.

I wonder if it's a cultural change.

:-P

That is NOT what I meant. I was probably 5 and remember the song and the pictures of NYC - at 5 I was not so aware the most men are not the romantic graceful characters that Gene Kelly personified! More's the pity really... instead men sit around and belch alot and make farting noises while impersonating ancient MTV cartoon characters and say derogatory things about women. An improvement....? I think not. ;-)

I love that icon!

Putting together Ikea stuff is so fun!

I am torn about the idea of a church with regular members who are homeless. I see the beauty in accepting them as they are, but my instinct is that their church should be doing things to change their homelessness and help them have a better worldly, as well as spiritual, life.

i understand and concur. The church does offer meals several times a week and helps people get back on their feet if that is what they want. The tricky part seems to be that many people don't seem to care about 'being independent' unless they get a hand out - and that of course does not teach independence, rather it teaches quite the opposite.
But, trying to always assume the best of people, I would say that many of the parishioners are there because they want to be there, and enjoy the fellowship and the food and the worship, but perhaps do not want to change their lives in other respects. I need to ask more about this.

It is an interesting and valid point you bring up and I appreciate your instincts!
