Philadelphia Art: Subject the Second: Orange Metal Thing

May 02, 2004 20:21

I recently went on a walk through campus to photograph more art for this series when I discovered a new piece I just had to share with you. At first I thought this was sort of jungle gym but upon closer inspection it was indeed, art!

See for yourself )

Caulder's fun. Personally, I like modern sculpture. I like the way modern artists are in love with shape and color. I'm turned off by a lot of the pretensionism found in modern artists but I do enjoy their art. A lot of people are disdainful of modern abstract art, saying "Anyone could do that." Well, yes, anyone COULD do that. But HE is the only one who DID.

So, in answer to your question, yeah, I think it's art. :)

We should get you out to Philly for an art tour some time. There's a LOT of modern art here. If you ever feel like taking the train down some weekend, just to get away from the riggers of College life, let us know and we'll be happy to show you around.

I adore Calder! If you're ever in DC, see his stuff in the East Building of the Nat'l Gallery of Art. You need to see one of his mobiles!
