I recently spent a few days in Rome, riding buses and walking around the main tourist sites. As a lone female, and quite obviously an American tourist, I expected some amount of harassment not only from those who prey on tourists, but also from Italians who aren't too happy with the United States right now. Interesting observations! Hey, you posted!

I have developed a fairly effective "urban face" and I feel like I get a lot of practice. At times I don't like how it feels -- it's like how I drive like an asshole whenever I'm somewhere not-Boston -- but it feels necessary.

Thank you for this! It fits my experiences in Paris -- most people wanted to ignore me, and those who didn't were easy to ignore (unless I actually wanted to interact with them, of course). But it's good to get more details about how other people manage such things.

I chuckled at your sunglasses passage :-).
