So I watched "Night of Neglect".
That's 40 minutes and 350mb I'm never getting back.
This was not only by far the worst episode of Glee, it might have been the worst episode of anything, ever. It was so bad that the totally legal copy I saw cut off a few minutes from the end of the episode, and I can't bring myself to download it again.
I can't really talk about plot because there was none. What really squicked me out was the awkward, non-funny lecture Gwyneth Paltrow gave some bullies about "heckling". Now, Glee has its preachy moments where we Learn About Right And Wrong. But this lecture went far beyond being didactic and turned into directly addressing online critics of Glee.
Now, GleeSucks.com is a fairly funny and fantastically bitchy site which I've taken to reading lately, and they had a silly little theory that Ryan Murphy reads their sight. In 2.1, the Jewfro kid keeps using the words "suck" in his blog, including the words "Glee is a giant ball of suck". But after watching Night of Neglect, I started to get an eery feeling that the GleeSucks was right.
Paltrow's speech was so, so, so stupid. Don't get me started on the fact that Becky was one of the hecklers, which is funny because she's mentally handicapped, and was manipulated into being cruel to others. Hilarious. But halfway through, the speech turns from "heckling people in real life, to their faces is wrong" to "expressing negative opinions on the internet is wrong". Yes, because vulnerable high school kids putting themselves out there in amateur performances is completely equivalent to multi-million dollar tv shows, whose creators happen to have fragile egos.
And on top of that, nothing was funny. The funniest bit was "Don't forget to vote Quinn Fabray for Prom Queen." And on top of that, the songs were boring, the one interesting song (Tina's) didn't even get to end because Tina's performances are always disposable anyway. Mike's performance was cool though.
Everyone acted completely out of character - humble Rachel? Santana defending Kurt for no reason? Sunshine being a bitch and bailing - and telling 600 other people to bail on the concert - for no reason? Mike suddenly being smart, even though the whole point of Mike is he's an athletic, artistic Asian guy who avoids the nerd stereotype?! And the whole episode had the feeling of being written at the last minute.
To top it off - just when you think Glee couldn't be kissing any more celebrity ass - next week's episode is titled "Born This Way." My spidey senses tell me we're going to deal with the sexualities of certain characters (!) and also talk about self acceptance. Can't. Wait.
Okay, that's probably the longest Glee rant I've ever written. But give me a break, it's one of my favourite shows, and I have nothing else to do today.
