THE PIRATES' LAMENT
(T. Beechey)

Well, I guess it happened once again --- the boys once more failed to be men
And even though they gave it a run, they just couldn't seem to get it done
I'm not saying that they didn't try cause, if I did, that'd be a lie
They tried with everything they had but, once again, things turned out bad

Who knows why? I can't explain
They just can't seem to break that chain
That's kept them bound and secured
Can you imagine the hurt they've endured?
Time after time falling flat
Never knowing where that light is at
Why's there no sun and only rain?
Who knows why? I can't explain

Once again, the boys went out, each with a holler and a shout
And a burning desire in their souls to do their best and reach their goals
They really did give it their all, they struggled and fought both big and small
But, in the end, things got rough and the all they gave was not enough
If they didn't try, I'd understand why they're always dealt the lower hand
If they didn't care, I'd realize there's no sense waiting for the prize
But they do try and they do care, they give all they have with nothing to spare
And when the dust and smoke has cleared --- just like before, no smiles appeared

Who knows why? I can't explain
They just can't seem to break that chain
That's kept them wrapped and tightly held
Why does God feel so compelled
To see their destiny incomplete
And bring them defeat upon defeat?
Why's there's no pleasure and only pain?
Who knows why? I can't explain

What can they do to change this course and end this cycle of remorse?
Everything they've tried up to date is either no good or much too late
What is the answer? No one can guess, there's just no formula for success
Anywhere to be found so, once again, they're cellar-bound
I already know and so do they what awaits the next time they play
We'd like to say it wasn't true but I know it is and so do you
It's inevitable, already set, a foregone conclusion that has yet
To happen and materialize, all we can do is heave our sighs

Who knows why? I can't explain
They just can't seem to break that chain
That's kept them tethered to the base
Can't you see the looks upon each face?
They know what lies up ahead
That's why you see that look of dread
Why's there only loss but never gain?
Who knows why? I can't explain

Well, I guess it happened once again and they're still where they've always been
For seventeen years, they've made their home where the mice and rats freely roam
They've introduced some fresh new blood and put the relics out to stud
And they claim next year, good things might start, but I just can't feel it in my heart...
