KATIE'S SONG - Dedicated To Katie Doll
(T. Beechey)

There's a little girl in Taylors, South Carolina named Katie Doll and, as the result of a traumatic brain injury, has been in a coma for over a year. This poem is written from my supposed perspective of her mother and dedicated to Katie's ongoing struggle. May God bless you, Katie

As I glance upon my image which is written in her gaze
I seek a hint of knowledge and a glimpse beyond the haze
Something that allows me to sense that she's aware
Someday, some way, somehow we can finally get to there

As I look at my reflection which appears within her eyes
I search for a connection regardless of its size
Something that permits me to know she understands
And that's when it all hits me that it's all in His Hands

For He is the Creator
He's the One to decide
Be it sooner, be it later
Only He can stem the tide

I wonder what she's thinking, does she still engage in dreams?
We communicate through blinking and, at times, it almost seems
There's a speck of recognition --- just a glimmer, just a hint
Is it merely hopeful wishing or perhaps a sacrament?

I tell her of the comings and the goings of each day
I find myself re-thumbing through old pages while she lay
And I know that she listens, every once in every while
When she thinks I'm at a distance, she'll flash a tiny smile

Yes, He is the Creator
He's the One to decide
Be it sooner, be it later
Only He can stem the tide

Sometimes I feel so useless, thoughts of guilt invade my mind
I start making up excuses for the plot which fate designed
Why can't I trade her places? Why not me instead of her?
All these voids within the spaces, every moment is a blur

So I kneel anticipating, fingers intertwined and held
It's all about the waiting for a sign to be unveiled
Something that reveals to me that indeed hope still remains
And as I kneel, I voice this plea amidst the tearful rains

Cause He is the Creator
He's the One to decide
Be it sooner, be it later
Only He can stem the tide
