A-hunting we shall go

Triv has just come back to the island with... something. It's a rather large something, in a big and oddly ridged soft-sided plastic box. It doesn't appear to be terribly heavy for its size (a good thing, as one of the things she doesn't tell people about her particular variety of dimensional travel is that she can't bring anything with her ( Read more... )

Alec has a calico kitten on his shoulder. He doesn't know why it's there, but it seems to like it. It had been following him around for the past couple of days and sleeping on his head.

He peers at Triv and the something with a curious expression, but he doesn't ask what it is.

Triv gives him a nod - and a slightly curious look for the kitten - then starts undoing the straps and unfolding the box. It appears that the box itself is part of the contraption, the sides unfolding into broad flat planes, and the central section into a narrow transparent shape with two hatches. Inside the box are more panels, these ones opaque. She begins to unload them from inside the clear box.

The kitten mewls and bats at one of the numerous earrings in Alec's ear. He shifts his shoulder slightly, causing it to grip tightly and stop playing with his ear. Alec watches her, leaning up against the doorway, waiting to see what happens.

Triv continues putting the contraption together, attaching the twin panels that had been the box to the clear section, then turning it over before putting the opaque panels from the interior back in... in a very different configuration. The clear center now had a floor, and atop the floor were two seats, one behind the other.

The next morning dawned clear and a bit cool. There had been visitors outside the thorn fence - they'd been easy enough to hear - but the creatures (Triv had said they were probably hyenas) hadn't tried to get through.

Breakfast was some of the dried goat that Triv had unearthed from her duffel, shaved thin and boiled with some kind of grain and dried lentils. The result was surprisingly tasty.

Alec slept through it mostly. He was always a heavy sleeper. As for breakfast, he's not a picky eater and scarfs it down quickly, rather like a hyena.

"So... what do we do now?"

"Well, there's a river down there - and where there's water, there's prey. First, though, we need to get a feel for the area, so for now we need to scout out a good place to hunt. If you're done, grab your weapons and we can get started on that."

"Yes'm." He cleaned up his breakfast dishes and put them away. He then retrieved the weapons that Triv had provided for him. He strung the bow and slid the quiver over his head, settling it on his back. The sword he took some time with, hefting it and holding it. He remembered Orion teaching him how to use one. It was different from that one, but light enough. He strapped that onto his waist and reported himself for inspection by Triv.
