Holy crap! Yes i would offer to buy groceries and cook a meal, or buy them a meal. I offer to pay for petrol and i would never expect them to treat me to all my meals. One meal might be nice, even just a nice lunch, but i wouldn't expect my host to be out of pocket like that! They're offering bed and probably breakfast. I would expect to pay my own way after that and contribute to groceries and petrol at the very least. I would hesitate to invite that "friend" again and if they invite themselves... well look at my icon ;))))

How rude! Personally I try to pay for anything I can while I am a guest, ranging from filling the gas tank, paying at least my own admissions into venues, groceries wherever feasible and definitely a NICE meal for everyone (not including fast food). And I take a 'Host/ess Present' too, or leave one when I depart. And write a thank-you note.

Perhaps nobody ever taught your guest how to be a good one.
