Powerful story of a teen mother:

It really captures how terribly our society treats young women who get pregnant before they "should" - aka before society deems it proper. And how society just stupidly assumes that young women cannot be good mothers...

the first time I read this story, in a compilation, it moved me so much that I went straight to the computer to look up Allison Crews, the author. She died recently due to a mix of medications that weren't properly screened by her doctor. I think her story is really brave, and I don't think anyone has enough respect for teen moms. the story definitely changed the way I respond to teens with baby's... it's really easy to criticize someone.
Thanks for posting the story.

Agreed. Alli was a good friend of a few of my close friends on LJ. She also had an LJ too. The community online was VERY shaken by her death. She had a powerful effect on a lot of young moms and I very much admire her.

Wow... I had no idea that she died :( And from a doctor's mistake too. That's terrible... I'm so glad that I found her story though! Thank you for letting me know the ending...

love and peace.

She died?!!! That's horrifying and so unspeakably sad...
I liked the article she wrote. She was one of the lucky ones though. Many young women are not fortunate enough to have the support of their parents. I personally know one who was forced to opt for adoption, and many others who are simply kicked out whether or not they decide to keep the baby. A very young mother can't have story with a happy ending like this without the love and support of her parents.

Parental support is so important, I totally agree. I've met a lot of really great teen moms on some forums that I'm on though so I know they aren't just an anomaly (and not all of them had parental support either... but they were older teens - like 16 and up). It's just so sad that there's no support from society for those times when there's no parental support :(

I would have been kicked out - my parents would have expected me to either keep the baby or opt for adoption depending on the circumstances being anti-abortion, but I definitely would not be living under their roof if I was pregnant and unmarried. They probably would have gotten over it eventually, but I'm so glad I never had to find out... Fred's glad we never had to find out either!

love and peace.
