Unfortunately, I'm not the best person to ask. I read a lot, but my tastes are admittedly "middlebrow." I try to squeeze in the classics once in a while - I read Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49 mainly because it's his shortest (about 150 pages). That might be a good place to start. Just be careful when approaching Gravity's Rainbow. I heard that one's a bear.
