It's only going to be The Golden Compass in America, and here/everywhere else it's going to be Northern Lights, like the book was. Can't remember where I read that, but I know I did somewhere! I still don't really get why the Americans had to have a different title, it's like Harry Potter all over again!

Thank goodness! I think it was changed for the US because of some publishing thing: I think he wanted to publish it as one and the first place it got accepted wanted the other. Something like that. At any rate, I think it's really demeaning to term the alethiometer a "compass". I know it's a bit sad, but it's so so so much more than a compass.

The whole Harry Potter thing is irritating too. Wasn't it only changed because people didn't know what a philosopher was?

Soundtrack music galore~

I remember reading the first His Dark Materials book, but I must have been quite young since that's all I remember.

I've just noticed that actually. I probably listen to more soundtracks than I do normal music.

I think you should reread, if you're of the slightly fantasty inclination. At least before the films: I always find if I've a read a book but forgotten most of it, then seen the film, I can't get the film out of my head. A Clockwork Orange has never quite been the same for me.

I might if I can locate it; I don't own it and our library is a joke.

A Clockwork Orange has never quite been the same for me.

Likewise, especially the part where they break into the house of the korshka (cat~I love the random Russian words) lady.

The movie is very decade-culture centric in that so much more is focused more so on sex than anything else. It really annoyed me at points... I mean, the suit he admired was left out entirely and he obsesses over a giant... well, you know.

It didn't scar me near as much as the movie version of The Count of Monte Cristo did though. I'm not sure if you've ever read the book or seen it, but that was absolute slaughter to the 100th degree.

You're right, and I have to admit it's one of the many reasons I think Kubric is overrated as a director. He doesn't seem to do anything so amazingly innovative and effective: at least his films don't really affect me in anyway, whether or not I like them.

I haven't read it actually, but I'll stay away from the film in that case. I just get irritated when directors purposely stay away from things in the book when it isn't a case of time/budget/production constraints. That's what irritated me so much about the PoA film. It just seemed like the director was indulging themselves rather than actually bothering with the book.

Hmm, I'm not so sure: my only issue is that Mrs Coulter is meant to have brown hair. For some reason Nicole Kidman with blonde hair is just Nicole Kidman to me. And also, I'm not sure about Daniel Craig...I would have thought Jason Issacs would be the perfect choice. But then I think he's just THE hot older man villain.

I think it is actually, thank goodness!

A week ago I would have hoped to be in your position just because of all the work I had. However, now that I have the prospect of a whole evening to myself, I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do. It's really tragic.

Don't mention it. I wasn't sure what to get, but I thought that Malteasers hot chocolate always cheers me up with it's malty goodness. I just hope you can actually drink it? I don't know if you'd be feeling a bit anti-food and I'd bought you something you couldn't have yet. :X

it's a vicious circle, really. you pray for time off, but then once you get it a) you feel like crap and b) the work piles up. (which makes you feel more crap, obviously)

i've never had malteasers hot chocolate before, actually. didn't even know it existed! i get really stupidly excited about new things, so it's all good. x

Well thanks! I'm glad someone thinks I've good taste in music- it's quite a novel feeling!

The Northen Lights is being made later this year, in time for Christmas, I think. I have to admit, I'm not 100% on casting, but I'm going to reserve judgement because I just adore the books too much.
