The Honey Trap
Things escalate fast. When it's all over, Dr. Gaius Baltar is lying sprawled before them in the dirt, staring at the three guns pointed at him with wide eyes. He's trembling like a rabbit in a trap, panting too hard from his last feeble attempt to run.
"I didn't do anything!" he sputters, sickly pale in the light of Caprica's blue moon. "I, I swear I didn't do anything! I, I didn't touch the security mainframe! I didn't!"
"Considering you were in charge of building it," Casey remarks with a low growl, "we could kill you for treason just for that admission."
The world-renowned scientist swallows convulsively as words pour out of him. "That's not what I mean! It wasn't my code! I didn't write the code!" His eyes grow wider when Sarah readjusts the grip of her gun, her face hardening. "She did it! She wrote the code when I couldn't!"
The three of them exchange a look.
"Guys, maybe it's just me," Chuck nervously says, "but don't you think we should hear him out before we shoot?"
---
The next day, Sarah and Casey are standing in a surveillance room with their arms crossed, watching Dr. Baltar's interview on artificial intelligence on the networks. The memory drug worked like a charm; the scientist is cool and composed now, nothing like last night's quivering mess, and he has no idea they know his code was compromised.
"I still think we should have shot him," Casey remarks, unlocking and locking the safety switch of his gun idly, again and again.
"The woman he was talking about isn't in the Intersect, or any other database," Sarah reminds him. "There's no other way of finding out who she is and what she did. We have to wait for Baltar to lead us to her. If it's a honey trap - if she works for the Cylons..."
Casey grunts unhappily. "Let's just hope we'll be able to ID her before they show up."
"That's why we have Plan B," Sarah reminds him. "Chuck's already on his way to Picon to alert Beckman. If anybody can prevent a Cylon invasion, it's him."
"Better update my will," Casey says, snapping the safety switch back into place.
Baltar meets up with the target thirty minutes later. The earth has started shaking even before they make it out of the base.
---
Chuck is numb. He's never been so numb. Everybody is dead - Casey and Sarah have to be dead. If he'll think of anything but what he has to do next, he'll snap. And what he has to do currently is convincing the captain before him that Chuck is all that's left standing between the Cylons and total annihilation.
There are undercover Cylon agents hiding in the Fleet.
Either they work for the Cylons, or the Cylons look like us.
"The President... yes, you have to contact the new President..." His head hurts. He was knocked out during the attack when his ship was caught in an explosion. It's barely been an hour since he woke up in medbay. But it's not too late. It can't be.
Gaius Baltar's libido destroyed the human race.
"I need to tell her your name" the captain says, looking exhausted, dark circles forming under his eyes.
It takes a moment for Chuck to even remember the name on his ticket.
"Dr.... Dr. Amarak," he says. "Dr. Charles Amarak from National Defense."
"Preparing to jump!" the tech officer shouts over the noise of the engines, hurrying across the bridge. The Olympic Carrier is trembling under their feet.
Chuck swallows hard.
There's still a chance to safe the world. He has to keep believing that.
