Thor 2 (spoilerfree, of course) (BEWARE: not so spoiler free anymore in the comments)

Nov 01, 2013 13:47

So happy Halloween, everybody! While most of you were running around in costumes, doing as Americans do, I was seeing the Thor: The Dark Kingdom (yes, in Germany it's a kingdom) premiere in my local theater. It's a shitty little place but the upside is, you can show up 10 minutes before the start of the movie and still have great seating choices ( Read more... )

YEAH I KNOW.

Not sure what spoiler you mean but if it's the ending... OMG yes. There are so many things in there that I think you will enjoy so much. The dynamics between people, oh god the fic.

I DON'T KNOW WHEN IT HAPPENS but I've been warned I will probably write lots of fix-it fic to bring someone back (lol vague vague vague)

I'm reeeeeeally glad to hear all this though, I've been waiting for this movie for years (SERIOUSLY WHY 3 IRON MAN MOVIES BEFORE ANY OTHERS GET THEIR 2ND, NOT COOL DO NOT CARE BYE BYE TONY STARK)

Ah yes, that. :D Well I'm gonna be reading the fix-its. It better involve a lot of badassery by that someone because the movie has given me an entirely new appreciation for them.

Yeah I know, right? It's just awesome if you're waiting for a sequel and then it's out and it's okay, it doesn't even have to be brilliant, it just has to be okay. And I've just been posting on Tumblr about how the best thing about this movie is that I can't wait for the fanfic. It's not a movie that makes writing sequel fic hard. It's a movie that opens up possibilities for a whole generation of new plotty fic about almost all the characters. And nobody should leave the fandom in outrage, I don't think. So we'll have plenty to read while passing the time.

Thor a TENOR?! I... blame Loki. That is the only possible explanation for anyone thinking that was a good idea.

Hmm, was your problem with Selvig his reaction to the things in Avengers or his reaction to the events in Thor 2? (that should avoid spoilers.) I've heard a few complaints about the latter, but not the former.

Yup, a tenor. He sounds like a high school jock. It's ridiculous. And honesty the voice actor does a pretty good job considering the bad translation and the fact that it's not his fault he's a tenor. But then you have Loki with a nice, masculine, sonorous baritone that might be nothing like Hiddleston but works well enough. And having a lower voice than Thor and sounding less slangy, more dignified. And you get away from it feeling like Thor is this really shallow guy while his brother is mature and smart. And that's just not the original movie's intention at all.

My problem with Selvig was the fact that his reaction to the things in Avengers was used for comic relief. It made me uncomfortable. I have a thing about that. Apart from that, I liked his reaction to Avengers and to the events in Thor well enough; I can't blame him for either. (although they do make me wonder about how Hawkeye is doing!)

This movie reached the US! It's causing All the Feels on my side of the Atlantic!

So, yeah, good movie. Lots of fun, lots of good character development, the ladies rocked out. I did feel like this wasn't Chris Hemsworth's best work, but I think that was largely because of the script. All of his Big Moments felt kind of rushed so that they could get back to the quipping and the hammer-smashing. At least he wasn't a tenor. Hiddleston on the other hand . . . the camera loved him. The script and the acting handled Loki perfectly.

OMG, best cameo ever! (And, no, I don't mean Stan Lee's.)

And, yes, the ending. Everybody loves a happy ending. (*maniacal laugh*)

Good to know I'm not the only one who felt . . . weird about where they went with Erik Selvig. It was awkward because the entire theater was laughing and I was just sitting there going . . . o_o And it made me worry about Clint.

ALL THE FEELS. It really does. :D I'm so pleased; it's so rare to get a good sequel, I'm not used to getting to enjoy a movie on this level.

I'm very curious to see Thor (the character) in English now. I can see how the script would have rushed him, yes. Also, I noticed how his most important moments of character development were all triggered by Loki's trickery, which makes them seem a lot less consequential than they wold otherwise have been.

The cameo was just awesome.

The ending. :D Loki gets what he wants. But not what he needs. It surprised me, but in such a good way. (I'm giving up on spoiler free discussion here, I'll have to put a warning in the title)

God yeah, I'm worried about Clint, too. Selvig was just strange, though. It reminds me a bit of the first movie, how they used mental health as comic relief, too (when Thor was tied to the hospital bed), except it wasn't offensive then. That made me uncomfortable, too, but more on a trigger level and less on a level of good taste.

You were not the only one who felt really skeeved about Selvig. I can't believe we forgot to talk about that! And also, this guy is a respected actor. Nobody would ask Anthony Hopkins to play that shit. It was just weird, and definitely seemed meant for comic relief. I would have been more okay with it if they'd had Selvig react strangely to the events of the Avengers but in a way that didn't assault his dignity. I think that would have been awesome continuity, actually. But yeah, it was just WEIRD. And as brennanspeaks says, it does imply worrisome things for Clint as well (which I'm sure will never happen).

Frankly, it was such a weird (and fairly unnecessary) choice, that I'm coming around to grinninfoole's theory that it was actually something that Skaarsgaard proposed himself, or at least elaborated on to that level. Because I just didn't see those kind of comic elements showing up anywhere else in the movie, and SS is a pretty accomplished actor that I don't think they'd initially write that way. But I could see it coming out of him having discussions ( ... )

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!

I am super excited for you, actually. And for me being able to talk freely in trovia's journal. ;) I am more excited than this icon implies, actually, but I just got it yesterday and I want to use it and well, I always associate you with Frigga. :)

also re: what "that scene" is, it's the FEELS choice (as in, it's her projection, not his illusion) because if it had been Loki, it wouldn't have happened the way it did, I am like 100% convinced
